Is cereal evil and a poor source of nutrition?

I have serious problems with cereals like kellogs and the like. If I eat this stuff which is very rare nomatter what I do my BG rockets and then plummits. I think this is due to the fact most cereals contain a shed load of added sugar and that the polycarbs are altered during the cooking process of the cereal.

Your thoughts?
 
Spot on. Kellogg's breakfast cereals were first invented as a food for invalids, incapable of eating proper food. Ultra refined, over processed, starchy, sugary rubbish quite frankly and best avoided.

That's amazing fergus. I had no idea cornflakes were invented for that reason. They certainly have caught on more than porridge and calf's foot jelly.

As far as diabetics are concerned I agree, cereals are the "spawn of the devil" :P
 
I must be the exception then. I eat rice krispies for breakfast, most days, and my bg is around 5.5 - 5.9 2 hours afterwards. No extra sugar though and with semi skilled milk. :|

At 26.1g carbs per 30g portion, Rice Krispies are one of the highest carb breakfast cereals made. Your ability to recover from the spike they will undoubtedly have given you just proves that your body is still capable of producing the extra insulin needed to cope with that spike. Unfortunately pushing your pancreas to its limits in order to cope with a high-carb food won't help to preserve its functionality long-term.
 
how many grams of those carbs are sugars? its a long time since I last had rice crispis

I find porradge or natural high fibre musli work really well for me.

I didn't know the answer to your question so I had a look at the Kellogs website . . . and found this little gem

"like all grains, rice is packed with carbohydrates... and a word that long must be good for you!"

On that basis hyperinsulinaemia must be fantastically good for you!!!

PS still don't know how much sugar there is in 30g of Rice Krispies 'cos Kellogs aren't saying.
 
As long as I stick to cereals with no added sugar such as shredded wheat, it doesn't spike my blood sugar. The Food Doctor do a cereal which claims to be low carb at only a few net carbs per serving. It was a bit like nuts and seeds with added cardboard though :D
