Is diabetes curable?

Hi I'm new on this site! My father is diagnosed last mount , he is 49 years old and he is pretty fat. Now he must use the insulin every 2 days, and he must be on diet. I have learned something about diabetes, but interest me if this disease is curable? And how much his life will gone change with diabetes? Thanks!
