Hi all. I am glad to report my levels are now stable since starting Humulin M3. I've worked out that 5 cartridges lasts me about 50 days. Now my problem is getting it abroad. I absolutely cannot afford to register over there at the moment, as my boyfriend is a student and we barely have money for food. I will be back here in 6 months for check ups and hopefully get more medication if my doctor says it's okay. I am seeing my GP on Monday to have a chat with him about it and see what he says. But I need a back up plan incase he says no. (to giving me enough until christmas).

I am completely aware that insulin MUST NOT freeze or get too hot. England to Amsterdam is literally a 40 minute flight, and I know it -could- still freeze on this, so I'd probably send it by boat or in the euro tunnel if that's possible with cooler packs and/or necessary precautions. That isn't what I am concerned about.

What I want to know is, is it LEGAL? Do you need a doctor's permission to post it? I also need Metformin, Micro-Fine 4mm pen needles, and test strips. Metformin and test strips not a massive deal to post, but I don't know what the rules are for needles and insulin. The needles are well protected and have caps on them, etc. As most of you who inject probably know already.

I also will need sharps bins, but I'm pretty sure that you can just put your needles in a bag or container and take them to a pharmacy anywhere and ask them to dispose of them, no?

Oh! And one other small question. I am now gaining weight on insulin! Exercising makes me hypo and then I have to consume more calories! What can I eat before bed (when I tend to almost hypo) to stop it dropping over night, but without making me fatter?

Re: Is it legal to post insulin from the UK to the Netherlan

First sending insulin, if you send by normal services then you will have no control about how it is sent. Other methods may be expensive.
Second in the UK a doctor is not theoretically allowed to give you a prescription for 6 months medications; some may but?

If you go to live abroad for less than 6 months then you can use an EHIC card. This should allow you to get ongoing care in the Netherlands and this would include prescriptions but you would have to pay the same as someone registered in the Netherlands would pay. You may be able to claim this back on your return to the UK (not sure of how that works)

(I live in France and may have had to make extended visits to the UK, it works just the same for me, I can visit a UK doctor and get a UK prescription using a EHIC)
