Is it 'Normal' to feel so ill with diabetes?

Hi, im a type 2 diabetes sufferer whos been diagnosed now for nearly two years, at first i was reasonably ok and diet contolled, then my blood sugars started to climb and i was put on ordinary metformin which made me quite ill with paliptations and ectopic heartbeats. I was then changed onto the slow release version, which was better, but i still feel good for nothing most days, suffer nausea badly and even after taking the stemitil type meds, i feel fairly rotten. My last blood test HB1C was down to 6.4mmols, so now im fairly well controlled, but this is still runing my life and i can no longer function properly from day to day.

Im feeling so poorly that im now starting to question is i have something else going on in my body that im not aware of, as i know i have fibroids and an hernia, but due to angina and asthma, and being 150kg in weight, my doctor isnt keen on me having an anaestic to put them right.

Hi Julz, that doesn't sound like a diabetes problem. With that level of control, you should be able to live a normal life.

However, the experience of many of us is that a reduced carb diet not only improves BG control but helps weight loss. Hope you feel better soon.
 
Hi Julz,

Reading through your post, I suspect that your multiple health problems are what is making you feel ill. Only an opinion.
I would certainly go back to your Dr. and discuss things. Maybe the medications are causing you to feel like this. He may offer you an alternative to the SR Metformin to see if that is why you feel so rotten. Some people just cannot tolerate it, even the SR one.

Clearly you can feel pretty rotten with diabetes for many reasons particularly with uncontrolled diabetes. However, there are many other things, not diabetes related, which can also make you feel rotten.

You say that "at first you were reasonably ok and diet controlled" so I am wondering if you have changed anything - your diet for example. You also say that you are "150kg in weight" so is this something that you are working on? Perhaps if you can get your weight down your body could increase it's efficiency which may even mean that eventually your meds might be able to be reduced. All of this might help you to feel better as well as making it easier to deal with your other varying health problems. :idea:

Many of us have found we are unable to handle the carbohydrates so have reduced those. There are other ways of controlling your weight and BG levels and you would find interesting information in the diet threads. There is usually someone on here happy to answer any questions.
 
After feeling grotty for 18 months or so, I just put this down to my diebeties 2. Last Aug I was fortunate to meet a paramedic who after asking me certain questions told me to go imediatly to se my GP. After tests Last October I was fitted with a Pace Maker. I feel fine now. But do get down with my D2. So I hope you go to get sorted.

Thanks guys, well i have been to see the diabetic nurse today and she has taken me off Metformin as this was not helping with the ectopic heartbeat and the sickness. They have also found a UTI, so have got antibiotic tablets for that. im also due to see the senior Gp at the practice in the morning, so we will see where we go from there. I cannot eat anything at the moment, just surviving on milky tea, so i have just lost nearly 4kg when i got weighed today.

Still feeling rather unwell today, but at least the anti sickness tablets are making me sleep so im not aware of the feeling whilst im sleeping.

I wished they would send me to a cardiologist and get this heart problem sorted out for good.

Hello again Julia,

Sorry you are still feeling poorly, sleep is probably helping though. The weight loss is probably good for you in the long run but that is NOT a good way to lose it! :shock:

As regards the cardiologist, take the bull by the horns and just ask straight out for a referral to a cardiologist. Take someone with you, if you feel it would help, which will give you backup and also a witness to help you remember all that was said.

Well another opinion today from the senior GP and a better explanation and understanding of whats causing the ectopic heartbeat to become worse at times. Yes, im now classed as allergic to the Metformin, and one of the reactions is for my body to produce/release too much adrenaline all in one go, hence the palpitations and feeling so sick, my body is suffering a type of shock from it, which inturn is causing the ectopic heartbeat to increase as my heart struggles to cope with the effects of high levels of adrenaline in my bloodstream.

At 6.5 mmols fasting glucose levels, and without any Metformin for 3 days now, they have put me back onto diet control for a month to give my system time to settle down. It then will be a HB1c check, and depending on levels then, i may be started on new diabetes meds, which hopefully will suit me better.

In the meanwhile im on Diazapam 2mg and anti-sickness pills, as well as my normal medication for high bp, Lisinopril 20mg, Iron tablets, and Bendrofluazide.

For the first time in 3 days i have just managed to eat a banana, and better still, not feel sick after it!

Hopefully im now on the way to feeling better

Its good that you are being taken seriously, & given the help you need. Hope you continue to make progress.

Diagnosed 4 weeks ago with diabetes type 2 stopped smoking drinking on 2 metformin twice day, feel weak fed up another 3 weeks before I see nurse again, watching diet, no help from GP when to him 18 months ago with tired legs, blood tests various other test x rays couldn't find nothing wrong until 4 weeks ago
