My reading this evening is 8.3 before tea is it normal to fluctuate.. I am now worried and do not know what to do...

My Doc put me on statin one a day and I have just read...Which may answer my question..

There is no need to panic. Statins have been used for many years by millions of people, including diabetics, and their benefit on preventing heart attacks, strokes, and death outweighs the small increased risk of increased fasting blood glucose levels and diagnosis of diabetes.

Hello davideB,

first of all don't worry. I know how annoying it is when you get a pre-meal reading that's higher than you're hoping your post meal reading will be.

All you can do is keep the carbs in the meal as low as possible and then take some exercise afterwards - if the weather there is anything like it is here, then have a walk after tea to keep your numbers sensible. No one wants to have high readings, but you still have to eat, so chalk this one up to experience and work on your numbers to get that pre-meal number down.

As to Statins pushing your numbers up, I've not heard this and have used Atorvastatin for several years - maybe someone else will comment.

Hmmn, having read that, a couple of things spring to mind.

They say that the use of statins can increase blood glucose levels in a small number of patients, but without doing a comparative test, how would I know? My fasting levels are in the 4's with the statin and I'm getting the benefit. To some extent does it matter, given the other benefits of statins. (I realise this is an arguable point - I think they are helping my cholesterol so continue to take them).

They also say that statins can cause an increased risk of being diagnosed with diabetes. This doesn't make sense to me. Initial diagnosis is often made due to a simple test of blood sugar (or fasting blood sugar) and if the statin was increasing the reading then a diagnosis of diabetes might happen as a result. But then surely a glucose tolerance test would knock that diagnosis on the head for a non-diabetic patient who is simply being affected by a statin. Don't I have high blood sugars because I'm diabetic, not the other way around.

Well I took your advise: I had fish for tea, with spinach went for a good walk had an espresso cam back waited 20 mins and I am now 5.3  HAPPY OR WHAT!!!
