Hi all, I'm a type 1 on insulin pump. In the last 2 years I've gained a few pounds that's pushed my BMI up to 27. My recent hba1c was 7.5% about 6 months ago I joined a well known weight loss group (I'd rather not say who) to tackle my weight gain issue. I lost nothing with it... Granted my weight stayed the same but It was so frustrating! Anyway I am wondering is the LCHF diet the way to go for me? I'd appreciate some tips & advice. I'm Desperate to lose this weight by the summer. Thanks.

Probably. This is a good explanation of how to do it: http://www.dietdoctor.com/lchf

This is important (from the web page above):

  • Avoiding the carbohydrates that raise your blood sugar decreases your need for medication to lower it. Taking the same pre-low-carb diet dose of insulin might result in hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). You need to test your blood sugar frequently when starting this diet and adapt (lower) your medication. This should ideally be done with the assistance of a knowledgeable physician.

This is very good advice. I had my first ever hypo yesterday. It was VERY scary.

I suppose the while high fat aspect scares me because it's been drilled into me low fat, no fat, cholesterol readings etc etc

Same with all of us until we tried it, and saw the results, including lower cholesterol. It is hard to get un-brain washed, but you soon learn not to feel guilty about eating butter or having a delicious fry up.

Great thank you for all that information. Very informative. Can I ask how long into it did you see results? I have about 2 stone to lose but would be happy with one gone!

I've comfortably lost three stone over about 9 months.

Ok that's great! One more thing, my BS have been a little higher than normal, around 8-10... Will this calm down... Maybe I was too premature with reducing my Basal rates?
