Is Metformin making me angry?

Been taking It for 4 weeks, one with breakfast, one with evening meal. Tummy upsets are not as bad as they were but still get bloating/pains. In the last week by nighttime I feel as if I have a rage inside me and keep snapping at everyone. Feel so angry I could shout. I was reluctant to start with Metformin as I'd seen the effect it had on my late mother. It turned her from a sweet placid lady to an aggressive unpredictable one. She soon stopped taking it. When I told the Dr this she said Metformin was not known for affecting mood so on the promise of helping with weight loss I started taking it. I'm following a LCHF diet and my blood sugars have come down, not sure if it's the diet or tablets or the combination. No weight loss though. Has anyone else found it messes with your head?

Everyone is different. If your mother also had problems then this may be a pointer.

If you can keep the same eating profile and stop Metformin for 4 weeks this should help to track down the cause.

This may, of course, just be your body reacting to a lower general blood glucose level.

Could it be a general adjustment and changes you know you have to make that is making you feel angry? We all go through so many emotions when diagnosed, it could be your mind is feeling upset that you've been diagnosed and this is showing through angry. I know I went through all the emotions when diagnosed in January, why me? What can I eat? Why did I get this? At times I was angry, at other times upset.

Either way I hope it settles for you - there is a Rant post for the times you really want to let off steam.

The only problem I had with Metformin was bad bloating that was sorted when I changed to the slow release of which I take 500mg twice a day. Have not heard anyone here say it made them feel angry

I got angry at the metformin rather than because of it both regular and slow release.. stopped taking it and felt a lot better digestively..
Changed diet dramatically and have never needed it again so far. Finger crossed it will remain like that.

Thanks all of you. I'm wondering whether it is just mixed emotions, feeling deprived etc. Plus how do you know whether it's the diet or tablets working? I will have a look for the rant section!!

I'm on metformin, no mood changes. But before diagnosis, if I needed to eat, I became extremely short tempered. Almost exploding sometimes. Maybe is as someone else suggested, a blood sugar adjustment?

Yes. Metformin made me very irritable and angry. By nature, i.am not that way. I felt like a monster being driven by some demonic force.
I started taking Metformin because it is the only medication my insurance will pay for. I was taking Januvia and hit a donut hole. It was $300 for a 90 day supply. Not everyone is "One Size Fits All." Diet and exercise help. This is a horrible disease. I am sorry your mother passed away. It works very well for some people. Others not so much.
