Hi after looking round the forum and reading other peoples blood levels and concerns.I have been testing 4 x /day and only have 3 levels under 10. in 3 weeks i'm type 2 following healthy food rules though i can't exersize much due to a spinal injury.
Just wondered if anyone is similar :?:

Hi Justfocus -
Over ten consistenly seems a high. a couple of questions

1. when are you testing?
2. whose healthy rules are you following? As the 'healthy diet' given to many of us by our health care proffessionals has not done us any good,
3. have you read the advice to newbies that ken and sue post? viewtopic.php?f=20&t=17088.

Keep searching and reading and asking and people here will help as much as they can.

Hi annie p
First test straight away before breakfast.
Second two hours after breakfast
third two hours after dinner
fourth about three hours after dinner

i did'nt get any advise about food from my DB infact the only mention was to keep off sugary foods?
I have been using a calorie calculator for my diet to be honest. I was posted the link you mentioned but i couldnt get my head round it.
Even my meds seem totaly different to anyones ive seen on here.
And like most newbies i too am awaiting my dietition appointment
but i am loosing about 2lbs/ week i take Gliclazide 2x80mg with breakfast and 2 x80mg with tea.
Nurse spoke to me last week to say she was putting me on metaformin but haven't heard off her since. :?

A fasting test of over 10 is high. And the NICE guidelines for type 2 are that 2 hours after a meal you should be under 8.5. But if you are newly diagnosed then you are still adjusting and that may take a little while. But if you are loosing weight you are doing something right and that will help your blood levels.

Most of us here find it hlep to reduce our carbohydrate intake. Cut down on the starchy carbs like bread/pasta/rice. These are all things that basically your body converts to sugar. Where you do eat bread wholemeal is best, and some people find that the burgen soya and linseed bread is the best one for their BG level.

If you tell us a typical day's food theh we may be able to offer some suggestions.

As you keep testing you will find what works for you and what doesn't and what foods to avoid. But it does take time so just keep reading and taking it in and you will get there in the end. xx

But don't worry about how complicated is all seems it takes time to adjust to the new way of thinking and eating.

Were you loosing weight before you were diagnosed, or have you just started loosing weight after improving your diet?

That's a large starting dose of gliclazide. Was your blood sugar very high when you were diagnosed?

Hi HLW
i just started loosing weight when i was diagnosed because of the new diet.
90% of my readings are higher than 15. I keep a record of my bloods for my DN 4x/day 7 days / wk. I think my reading was 28. I got an out of hours phonecall of her on a saturday ? Did seem a bit odd though. ! All she tells me when i speak to her is i'm doing well . I did drink heavily before that and only have a couple of whiskeys on a friday. I was a proper 20-30 pint session drinker and this is wk 4 .

hi here is todays bloods and food intake :? lol. the best i've had yet
any advice is welcome I'm type 2 :?:

Hopefully someone will reply soon who knows more about healthy eating than me :)

The only things there to speak of are the apples and the fruit juice although as part of the days intake I would say they are acceptable.

The reductions in BGs are good ones and you should be happy with that.
They do need to come down a bit more though, they will, however, improve with time.

I suggest a visit to your Doctor and take the readings and the food you have eaten with you.
He/she might offer you different medication to help.

It's a hard path we tread, and any help you can get to get your BGs down further will make life a bit easier.

As and when you have got to where you need to be you might be able to reduce the meds, but always after speaking with your Doc.

Hiya! I'm not Type 2 so perhaps shouldn't be responding to this, but I thought I'd make sure you know that many diabetics can't eat fruit (it is full of fructose which is a sugar) - two apples would send my BGs through the roof! Try swapping the fruit for veg or salad. As a rule of thumb, 10g carb will raise your BG by 3 whole points - two apples is maybe 15g carb or more - hence the 4 point increase.

 I had never give fruit a thought at all . It just shows you may think your eating healthy .Then another sneaky diabetical bomb blows your mind
Ah well we wouldnt have any luck at all if we did'nt have bad luck

:D Thanks halli HLW and smidge 8)
JF.

Berries are lower in carbs than most other fruit. Prehaps you could try them instead of apples. Well done on reducing your levels though :D Keep up the good work.
I'm also on the same med and same amount as you :)

Hi ClaieG 06
Thanks for your support. Just had my fast test and it's its the lowest ever @7.7 i know i should'nt read into it but i'm buzzing .Might crack open a a fine 2011 orange juice to celebrate  .
How you getting on? :D

Step away from the OJ  It's full of sugar and carbs.
I'm not doing too badly but would like to do better! Have learn't so much from this forum :D Were you put on that level of Glic straight away? I started on just 80mg once a day, then after a week was increased to twice a day, then 1x 80 and 1 x 40 for about 3 weeks and now the two times 80 twice a day!
BG levels are getting better although still getting some high ones. Most are now in single figures :)

The oj is safe
I too was started on the gliclazide 1 x 40mg before breakfast
and 1 x 40mg before tea. Now on 2 x80mg pr-brecky and 2x80 mg before tea.
I have read on this forum that my gliclazide is a high dose and that most people started on the metformin. My DN called me on friday last week to say she was going to introduce the metformin monday gone still waiting on her now  .
There are a lot of people on this site that a very experienced diabetics . But everyones different .So opinions can vary :!: It can be quite trying sometimes especially if adivce given on here conflicts with your GP's how long ago were you diagnosed :?:

I was dx'd about 3 years ago. Was on diet and exercise to start, then on metformin but i didn't agree with me! I was then put back on diet and exercise and then just before christmas ended up in hospital with ketone acidosis and pneumonia. Was on insulin for about 5 days in the hosp and that's where i was started on the Glic. If my levels still stay too high then i've been told i will either have to go back onto insulin or maybe able to try Byetta.
Was also doing wrong thing foodwise which i've since learnt since joining here.

I have heard on here the metformin can have some pretty extreme side affects .I'm happy to try it but i already have a weak tummy. So it could be intresting to find out (not  ). Just done my bloods 14.3 :( . Maybe should have tried that oj
only had branflakes for brecky might aswell have had a mars bar :?
My pre diagnosed clothes are hanging of me but my weight is the same doh :!:

Hi JUSTFOCUS. First, well done on finding this forum. The advice and help here is fantastic. I looked at your daily diary and I couldn't see anything that would spike your BG's. Except the fruit juice. Because the chemical make up is changed by juicing it releases more sugar into the juice. An average 50ml of juice can contain up to 9 tsps of sugar. However, eating an orange or an apple will not have this effect, despite what the non diabetic says! Do you manage to do any exercise at all? That can lower BG levels. What about your portion sizes? They can also influence your sugars. We are all different, even though we have diabetes and what works for 1 may not necessarily work for another. It's all trial and error. Just remember....diabetes has to live with you, not the other way round.

Hi sue32
Thanks for your welcome'd advice. It never dawned on me about fructose in fruit juice. It's a good job this site is here as i would'nt of given it another thought. .I had menningitus when i was 12 and although i had a migraine for 18 or so months it was not as demanding as the diabetes . Just took my third reading so 1st was 7.7 :D 2nd 13.4  3rd 9.7  . The 7.7 is my best ever but there we go . ( maybe i should use my scores on the lottery)

I like the lottery idea :D
I'm new to all this too and agree that the whole diet thing can be a mine field! Tought I was being "good" when I went out having a bowl of tomato pasta but it gave me a 2 hour BM of 12.6 Think alot of it is reducing portion sizes especially potatoes and pasta. I'm definately thinner but haven't lost anything on the scales :( Today was the first day of my increased exercise aim of 30mins a day - I'll be a babe by the summer!!! Diabetes is a nuisance but if it gets me fitter and healthier, to live longer then it'll actually be a blessing in disguise!
Good luck and stay positive 8)
