I'm a type 1 diabetic, and have been for 12 years. I'm in uni, so my diet is not the best, and i go out and drink regularly. I have recently got thrush, and cant seem to get rid of it. Is this normal? And can it be sexually transmitted?

Hello

I have had thrush many years ago, but not had thrush for a long time now. I did have it when I was with my partner and obviously with sex it can be passed backwards and forwards. So to treat yourself you need to go and see your GP or a nurse and also your partner needs to be treated as well.

Try and get your blood sugar steady and uncontrolled diabetes will just keep adding to the thrush problem. Cranberry juice is good and 'applying' live yogurt to the itchy parts can help as well I used the yogurt method more). Don't use perfumed soap or shower gel, bath essence as this aggravates the problem and drink plenty of water.

I hope you can get some help with your thrush problem.

Good luck and best wishes RRB :)

It probably WILL be related to your diabetes (usually high blood sugars).

Try the Canestan (other brands are available) - oral tablet & cream. This usually works pretty well.
ALSO - there is a product calle BalanceActiv - 7 tubes of PH balancing gel which is inserted (can sting a little if your 'bits' are a bit 'raw') but it really helps. Do it for the full 7 days (best to do it at night before bed) & once or twice a week afterwards.

Hope this helps!

In short yes and yes and a good sign of poor bs control. Canesten 2 percent works quite well but keep treating until it is gone as it will come back.

Diagnosed type II 1998 2 x 80 mg Gliclazide, 4 x 500mg Metformin and 1 x 100mg Sitagliptin

Yes it could be related. I had thrush for about 5 months before I was diagnosed with type 1. It's actually what got the doctors to test for diabetes. Despite having every treatment available I couldn't get rid of it till I was diagnosed and got my sugars down. (They were 38 when i was taken into hospital). So I would try the treatments and try to get the sugar levels down as bacteria love Sugar :)
