Are you testing regularly? Just before and two hours after you eat? That will give you a better idea.

Yeh the only way you're going to know if you're getting hypers is by testing regularly. It's probably a good idea to keep a record of your BGL's so you can show your doc as well.

When are you due to have your HbA1c? There are other causes for thirst but if you are unwell (you mentioned a kidney stone) it can make your BG higher. If you are concerned I would go to the doc.

Re testing - many type 2s here have to self fund their testing because we're not supposed to need to test, but we all find it beneficial to do so because we can learn what's going on in our bodies diabetes wise. So there's nothing to stop you buying your own testing equipment, if you decide it would be useful to test.

Surely your doc has a clinical reason to allow you to continue to regularly test? If you have kidney problems you really need to be monitoring your sugar levels closely. I hope you can get back to your doc and get a script for test strips you can access.

My doctor didn't think I needed to test, nor has there been any follow-up since diagnosis. I was just sent on my way with a "No sugar!" message, and his opinion that I'll do okay just managing T2 by diet. No diet info or anything else offered. (Glad I found this site!) But I would really like to test, to see if I'm getting it right! The gear is a bit pricey, however, and I'm not well off, so I have to go by how I feel. Sometimes I slip, and eat too much carbs, especially when I'm doing shift work, but I know the next morning by how wretched I feel etc. It's hard - I often feel cut adrift. Anyway... this doesn't really answer the question. Just needed to vent a bit!

Katiemjy you are SO like me! I was diagnosed a few months ago, sent on my way with no idea what I'm meant to do or eat etc. The only thing different is that I was put on Metformin, but apart from that I've been left to my own devices, completely in the dark!

I feel so lucky here in Canada. My doctor had no problem giving me a script for strips. He knows I've cut out most carbs and is willing to prescribe any drug to help manage my diabeties, he wont until I need to. In other words, only if I don't control it with diet. He told me he wishes his other diabetic patients would take charge like this. Just because you can control it with drugs doesn't mean you should. They can be hard on the kidneys.

Now my dietician is a different story. She's not convinced that low carb is the way to go. According the the food guide i should have 175 to 250g of carbs a day. That amount would keep me in the diabetic range for sure.
