I've just been to the doctor as I was feeling really strange and dizzy, with tingling face and hands, a palpitations in my neck at night time and constant tiredness. I had a blood test a couple of years ago which said my blood sugar level was high so was worried I might have diabetes.

I had a blood test last week and was called into the surgery as my blood sugar was really high. Basically that's all they have said. They didn't say the words "prediabetes" and were really vague about what I need to do - other than lose weight and do more exercise. Also they need to test again in a few months to make sure I don't develop diabetes. Again very vague about when.

hi becca
welcome to the forum :)

hard to be 100% on the description you give but definitely diabetes at the top of my list.
can you get the actual blood sugar numbers from your doctor and post them.

also -- if you are being asked to lose weight -- how much ??
10lbs 50lbs 100lbs ????

It is a good post but a bit more information would be helpful.

you can certainly eat low carbohydrate and exercise and see if you feel better .

The doctor didn't give me numbers. It was all so vague. I came away more confused. I need to lose about 40lbs.

If it is prediabetes would the doctor definitely use that term?

the first thing i would do is make another appointment and ask for the actual numbers he used to determine his "course of treatment".
I would also ask about what forms of exercise he deems suitable ( you don't list your age or physical condition in your post )

doctors are not to be feared but are there to be engaged and asked why they recommend their treatment -- remember you are the patient.

If your BG was high a couple of years ago and now really high it sounds more like diabetes then prediabetes. Get the actual numbers, just call your surgery for a print out of test results.

Low carbing might be sensible regardless of what level of diagnosis.

You need to phone the surgery and get a printout of your results, they will be happy to give you them.
This is what I do and it is not a problem however they never just give them to me.

I decided to low carb when I was diagnosed as pre diabetic. I bought myself a monitor and saw what sent my blood sugar too high. The weight fell off me when I low carbed so it might be a good way for you to lose weight and normalize your blood sugar.

They would usually want to 3 tests to confirm a diagnosis of diabetes... I would get an over the count A1C kit and test your A1C... then you will know for sure
