islet cell transplant/pancreas transplant

I have type 1 diabetes which is badly controlled although i am doing all i can to keep my blood sugar stable. I recently saw a consultant at manchester royal infirmary to discuss options with regards to me having islet cell transplantation or possibly a pancreas transplant as i am taking a lot of insulin for my body mass and islet cell might not be suitable. Has anyone undergone either of these procedures or currently having appointments to discuss options as well? I would be interested to hear other peoples experiences to enable me to furthur weigh up the pros and cons.
Thank you for your time.

I had an islet cell transplant in 2008. I had 2 years with no insulin and now take only a small dose and have good control over my blood sugars. It has been a wonderful experience for me. The immunosupression can be challenging at times, but is much easier to contend with than insulin and its effects. Most of the time, I have no symptoms at all.

I write a blog about my experience at http://kathy-mynewislets.blogspot.com
I have several links on the site to information about the process and to others who have had this done.

Good luck

Kathy

Thank you very much for replying, i will definitely take a look at your blog. I think it is so much more helpful to get the opinions of someone who is in the same position as yourself than listening to a doctor try to tell you everything. Any extra info i can get to help me make an informed and positive decision is much appreciated.

I had combined kidney and pancreas transplant in 2006, been a total success no insulin from the day of the operation and totally normal blood sugar levels.I had mine at Guys in London and could not fault them on anything, the follow up is brilliant and they are always available should I need to contact them. I would be more than willing to discuss anything with you just drop me an e mail
