So what's going on in the world? It now has all these in depth diabetic discussions to read through, mainly low carb diets that THEY do not agree with. Isn't it about time that THEY started listening to or reading comments from the people who have the problems and are coping with them well rather than claiming THEY are the experts?

broads this argument has raged and raged - i dont know any dietitians that use high carb intakes - i take a mod approach, inc low gi and iv got loads of pts in the 5s and low 6 too. i am quite convinced that early intervention by a dietitian makes a big difference - alot of people dont see one or get advice from gps - ahhhh!

well actually broads the constant bashing of HPC gets on mine !

the thing is there are loads of people who dont come on here who have good results but u dont here from them - but such is life !

I saw a lady again today who I think everyone had given up on but I cant so last week asked her to do a food diary - she is on insulin and tablets . The food diary was appaling - pasties , crisps, chips , no veg at all . She wants some help and I have said I will see her weekly and change things on a weekly basis. People on here are motivated but alot are not and believe me it is an uphill struggle with alot. And tbh that is something many people on here do not get!

Hi Broads,
It might be an idea if we all printed Fergus's newbies guide and took it with us to show our HPs.

tbh graham - u take it and most will say fergus who? He is a not a HPC or qualified in health - he could be an estate agent!

I would also like to see a low gi guide and carb control guide but me thinks that wont happen as the other views appear to be ignored - just an observation as an outsider

graham - think about this - u turn up with a printout from a site that is not a professional site . Imagine your own job and some one turns up with a print out - bin me thinks!

graham - u are not thinking this through - gps get bits of paper from the internet constantly and so do I .

Ally
I understand that you are defending HCPs, but when you have scientists, who ae maybe not medical, they are more than capable of becoming EXPERT on a condition in which they have a strong personal interest.
On ocasions, I have solved problems for T1's feet, which the qualified people couldn't, because they were trying to fit his case into what they had studied and learned and I tackled things from first principles.
I know that my IQ is higher than that required to get in to medical school, let alone into some of the periferal studies.
Many others on this forum are the same.

but hana have u thought the hpc have solved loads too!

having a high IQ does not make u a better doctor hana - alot of it is commaon sense and practice and that is one thing alot of people on here do not recognise. reseraching on the internet does not make u an expert !
Actually sometimes having a personal interest makes it too emotional hana

Hi Hana,
I agree I've learnt more on this forum about treating my diabetes than from the Hps, and I thank you all for it.

Regards Graham

graham - i thought u had a wonderful dietitian!

the problem is graham how do u know what u read on here is right - think about it?!

tbh kegs patients bring all sorts in and after a while u just think omg not again.

If someone brought a piece by fergus or any one else in I would bin it as it has no credability what so ever. I am sorry if that offends anyone but it is reality folks.

people say alot on here and other sites but none of us know if any of it is true!

Yeah well I know about that. My nephrologist rolled his eyes in despair when I mentioned that I had been researching pancreas transplants myself. But given that I was provided with exactly nothing after my first visit, how the hell else was I supposed to find out more? Not having a go, I understand both sides!

(Seeing a nephrologist about a pancreas transplant? Yes I was in the right clinic, but the transplant team are based in Oxford and my guy's in Bristol.)

thing is kegs u get overun with info from pts .

I dont know what u do for a living but imagine having this all the time !

Hurray! Ally, hanadr, you've just reminded me why I love my job!! I've been struggling to remember this last few days...

And it's this: When a little know-it-all comes in off the street and tells me that the internet says do it this way, my contract doesn't preclude me from folding the paper into four, tucking it in his shirt pocket, handing him all his equipment, files, etc and telling him that if he thinks he can do better, he's welcome to try.

And quite often it feels damned good, too!!

And on the other hand, I shall try and hold that thought for Matron on Monday, just in case I need her help. Cuts both ways, I guess.
