itchy skin

Hi,
i've had very itching skin (especially my head, and upper body) for a few years, well as long as i can remember. Ive had type 1 diabetes for 15 years, but have always been badly controlled. I asked my doctor a few times about it and i suggested that it might be linked to my diabetes, as most things are. He made me feel silly and said i was being stupid, and gave me pointless creams for eczema.
Does anyone know if it is linked to my diabetes, and if there is anything i can do, its driving me mad!!

Hello Helen, and welcome to the forum.Yes ,itchy skin can be associated with badly controlled diabetes. When you say badly controlled can you tell us what your average blood sugar levels during the day are and your Hba1c?

Another possibility!
Itchy skin might be dry skin. Try using a moisturiser. I use one in a spray, designed for babies. Also use a gentle soap in the bath or shower. Baby soap or a moisturising shower cream. If it's your sccalp, look out for non drying shampoo.

Thanks for replying. I'm not very good at checking all the time, but my sugars do run pretty high, and are in the 20's quite a lot. My last Hba1c was about 10. It's quite embarrassing, considering i've had it since i was 8, but I've never really managed to get a hold on it. Do you think this is the problem with my skin?
I do moisturise everyday, but i have to admit it is quite dry.

Hi Helen
Some years ago I had a problem with very itchy skin and like your self was abandoned by the medical profession so I had to do my own research.
Most Insulins contain a chemical called M-Cresol and one of the many things it can cause is severe irritation of the skin.
I hope this information is helpful to you.

Hi,

I have type 2 diabetes, and suffer very badly with itchy feet, sometimes nothing happens for weeks and then for soime unknown reason the above return witha vengence, I am unable to why, on most occasion its confined to one foot, however some times both feet are attacked.
I take ALOE VERA liquid and it somehow has reduced the symptoms but for reason it then returns, I feel like tearing the flesh off the bottom of my feet, on various occasions the nerves attach my leg and the itchiness spreads to the back of my legs but this is seldom, usually the symptoms are confined to my feet, does anyone have any explanation or cure, your comments would be wellcomed. Thank You, Vic

I suffer from recurrent episodes of fungal infections, which are apparently related to diabetes and it itches like Hell. If that's the cause, Canestan and Lamisil creams normally clear it up within a couple of days. Otherwise, Eurax lotion (contains crotamiton), stops itching quickly and lasts for hours. It's the best over the counter remedy I've found.

Hope this helps.
