Just back from seeing the diabetic nurse, pretty happy I think.
Feet ok, eye test organised, next HbA1c test organised and only half way in the orange of her waist measuring tape AND I weighed less on her scales with my jumper and shoes on than I do on my scales without them - result!.
Showed her my BS, carb and dietary spreadsheet so she could see the BS levels I get for grams of carbs each day. Explained my problem as "I get good readings on 65g / day but goes pear shaped on much over 80g / day, so need some drugs so that I can eat a wider range of things." She agreed Metformin is only being partially successful at the 2 x 500g I'm currently taking.
Over an entire day I am averaging around 5.5 on my fasting readings and 6.0 on my +2 hours. Said I wanted to quickly get my fasting average down in the 4's by taking something like Januvia which should also help me have a wider diet. She said on my "excellent level of control" I would run the risk of hypo's even though Januvia is a passive (non insulin stimulating drug) but she would refer me to the Specialist Diabetic Nurse later this month to discuss. Anyone know if this is true? In the meantime to try and drive things down further and to give myself a bit more scope in what I eat to take an extra Metformin each day. I said fine so long as at some later date they don't take it away and leave me not being able to eat anything. She said they DO prescribe Januvia in my part of the world.
I must say she is was very open to discussion and even took away the Swedish Health service docs I printed out for her to read. I had taken them along to deflect any "why aren't you following NHS starchy carbs stuff" and to show I was basing my approach on good health care not quackery.
On my am I Type 1.5 or Type 2 question she said based on family history and other stuff they were definitely not ruling out 1.5 and were waiting to see my BS scores today. Seem to have shot myself in the foot as because they are good and under "excellent control" got told there isn't a lot of point in testing yet. Effectively so long as I take no meds that could further damage my pancreas they would suggest doing nothing significantly different either way at the moment so they'd rather delay tests at present. I'm actually happy with that so long as its a reasonably truthful statement?
Test strips still an issue but said they would re-evaluate after seeing the specialist.
