Greetings ! I am a seventy year old male, retired and living in glorious Devon. I am married and like to walk on Dartmoor when my health permits. I have suffered from hypoglycemia for many years, fed the condition with high carb foods, and became obese. Things came to a head and so I went onto the Atkins Diet. The results were amazing: i dropped the weight and felt better. However, after adding some carbs to my diet I put weight back on and am pre diabetic. Any amount of carbs, no matter how little, put me into a deep sleep for hours, and i have difficulty in awaking. The weight is going back on. Blood sugar tests at home show overnight fasting at 6.2 and two hours after a meal can go to 12 or 13. The doctor tells me that my H1 test proves that i am not diabetic and to stop the blood tests. He tells me that i think im an expert and poo poos internet research. I have asked for help elsewhere on this excellent resource as the situation is upsetting me and i feel ill.

Clearly carbs don't agree with you, regardless of whether you fit the doctor's criteria or not. Best avoid them in that case. You might have reactive hypoglycemia or even something called auto-brewery syndrome. But the answer to blood glucose/insulin dysregulation is to cut the carbs. I'd ignore the doc and keep doing what you were doing. It's your life and wellbeing - you don't need the doc's permission to look after yourself in whatever way you see fit. Arrogant doctors - grrrrrrrrrrrrr!
