Just a quick panic re wrong insulin!

I’ve just been distracted and gave myself the Fiasp instead of the Toujeo this am, so instead of 32 Toujeo gave it in Fiasp that I don’t think I have ever injected more than 8 units to go with a meal! Now instead of just a green tea breakfast had a milky tea and 2 thick slices of toast slathered in thick marmalade, then a milky chocolate ‘square’…nothing like my usual diet. Will this be ok, and how long do you think I have to increase the carbs?

Hi @Cumbrianjudith , I'm afraid this has happened to most of us and it's no fun.

Do you know your insulin to carbs ratio? If so, you should be able to roughly calculate how many carbs you need to eat/drink to cover the dose.

Do you use a CGM like Libre or Dexcom so you can monitor very closely to see when you're starting to drop?
Are you alone or with someone?

I would keep quick acting glucose like glucotabs, juice or coke very close by in case you'll see a quick drop at some point.

When I made the same mistake I found I needed to keep having something carby for some 6 hours, it may be that a larger dose lingers a bit longer than usual.

Good luck and let us know how you are!

How are you doing @Cumbrianjudith ? Fiasp can drop your levels very fast if you've not had enough carbs, as I'm sure you're aware, so as well as the helpful info above, I'd check your levels with a blood test for a few hours. If it was me, I'd err on the side of going a bit too high, and correcting for this later, just to keep myself safe.

Hope you're ok, please let us know. Take care.

Catch up…BG having shot down then seemed to stay in the 8-10 mark all day, bit wary of giving more insulin until aye evening meal when BG/ Fiasp seem to be working as normal as off to bed. Don’t think I’ll do that again in a hurry!
Sounds like you've handled this one perfectly, well done!

And thanks for letting us know. :)

Glad you’re OK. But I’m surprised that you never give more than 8 units per meal. Just what do you eat? My bolts for lunch yesterday worked out at 21 units

I normally dose at 1 Fiasp per 10 units and have smallish portions of obvious carbs like potatoes/ rice etc; my sugar treat is 85% dark chocolate. Having said I seemed to get the BG controlled the day later I had my second shingles vax, and had bad reaction with 101 degree F, head, throat and joint ache for 48 hours that then sent BG ( and brain) off… managed to record on Libre app I’d given myself a dose of Toujeo and Fiasp then later found the pen with needle still set at the dose so presumably not given! And to round all that off I had restarted the BP hypertensive drug indapamide the previous week, which I had always suspected increased my need for more insulin, so this am on 38 dose Toujeo, instead of the 25 dose of two weeks ago…not keen on having to inject so much more but now I definitely have the proof of using it twice, and removal three times. My dr.had said it shouldn’t raise my BP and it was difficult to find research that it did…. A project for the new year tackling the diabetic nurse.

We're all different. Different insulin to carb ratio's/correction factor and different total carbs consumed at any one time. My bolus for lunch yesterday was 2.7 but that's what I need to keep me in range.

I agree with this because 95% of the time my bolus is between 1-5 units, don’t think I’ve ever done more than that (on purpose, probably have by mistake a few times haha) for one meal in 26 years! X
