My fornight from hell continues .....

So boyed up from so much advice, and reading I forced myself back to the gym this morning,

Did 30 mins very gentle walking on the treadmill, so hard as Ive said before with high readings this month, 12 to 27 ... after being so well on metformin, hba1c 7% last test ...this will be 10%. im sure with the last 2 weeks readings.... I was willing to try anything glicazide that was added 2 weeks ago .. nothing at all

After 2 lengths of the pool I had trouble getting out, and one of the trainers came to help....
I explained briefly and he tested me on my meter that I had taken with me..... 27!!!!!.... was 13 when I left home to just try ANYTHING to get readings down... The added 160mg glicazide doing nothing!
Dont know how I got home was crying,.. he said that I cant come anymore until they have a 'SAFE' reading from my hospital team???? I just have a SDN! who is so short staffed, and im sure doesnt know as much as you all do on this forum... may ask for a referral
thank god I have appt tom.....

SOOOOO fed up of trying... have had virtually zilch carbs in 5 days... and just joined my gym here at a cost Im really going to struggle with.... Sick and tired of being sick and tired...

Mind you have a nice vodka and tonic from my lovely partner with slimline tonic and lime ZERO CARBS...... with my feet up :( huge hopes for tom

I've been trying gentle exercise although some times because of my muscle cramps I've had to cut back.

They say you shouldn't exercise at level 15, but I've been going in at level 12/13 and unlike your crazy reading of 27 I've been ok if not up to the 15/16 mark.

However I'm under my sister's observation, I'm luckly that she's a fitness instructor so she positions me so she can watch me closely.

Starving and exercise not a good combo though generally (is there a wagging finger emoticon here?).

Don't waste your tears on the dumb man at the gym. He got a fright.

Exercise is not a priority right now. I was a fitness freak, Thai Boxing, running, Zumba and yoga...every week. I stopped August and Sept as I had an op. And because I've been feeling ill since Oct I only do a bit of Zumba and some yoga and more recently just Zumba as the yoga leads to muscle cramps.

We all have goals to achieve, but right now your health comes first and you need appropriate treatement for the Diabetes.

No more increases on the Glic, it can't be good upping it to 160mg! I was naughty on it too, desperate for improvement but not wise to mess about with drugs, especially as there's a question mark over what type you are (where's that finger wagging emoticon?).

So please try to eat a little better if you can, nibble on cheese, olives, bits of seedy Ryvitas, some unsweetend soya milk and veggies (bar potatoes). I couldn't cope with 25g/50g carbs daily I felt so rotten, so am about 100g until I get to see the nurse for insulin on 12th Dec.

Worried about your 27 reading though, if this is still goes higher later, you'll need to call NHS24. Keep checking for Ketones too. And drink plenty water, which I think you.

And keep out of the gym for now or at least eat some food before going in, until you get tests/diagnosis/treatment. I have no idea what the 'safe' report is to be honest. He clearly isn't an expert because he would have said what constitutes a safe report...I've never been told this by my sister.

To be honest anyone can suddenly feel ill at the gym, the staff should be trained enough to request medical assistance if required i.e ambulance if it's beyond their first aid level of expertise.

Good luck for tomorrow, and try to relax and just keep testing your Glucose/Ketones and alert NHS24 if things get worse or you begin to feel worse.

Thanks J xx

Down to 20 ,now, Have just rang NHS D

They say... the reason for the rise is that Im secreting v v little insulin naturally Just trace of keytones
although a nice unexpected weight loss ( not a healthy one I know) of 4lbs

They say no reason for rush to a and e, but if keytones rise to go straight down.

they said they agree with your thoughts that this is maybe 1.5

Plan very lazy rest of day, with recorded sky stuff, am currently studying for my masters degree, and Ive got 3 weeks behind, but im not going to worry too much at the moment as have treacle in my brain

Aww alliebee - how upsetting for you when all you are doing is to try and address your health issues.

Sanober is right though, you shouldnt exercise with high bg levels like yours, I think this is one instance where relaxing with your vodka and tonic is the better option (dont overdo it though).

I am wondering if you really are type 2 diabetic? See your doctor again, insist on some tests. On the other hand you might be so insulin resistant that oral medication is just not doing what its supposed to do, so might be the time to go on insulin.

Dont feel a failure or fear insulin, hey, at least you will be prescribed test strips!! But no jokes, you will have guidance from your doctor or nurse when you start off on insulin, members in this forum will be helpful as these are people who have had first hand experience, not the theory but practice as well.

If your bg levels to higher still you should go to A&E today, at the very least seek medical advice tomorrow.
Dont worry things can be sorted out, dont despair, you will be able to achieve good control of diabetes.
All the best

Gosh Alliebee, you must be feeling terrible with all this going on. Keep a close eye on your levels and keytones, as the others have said if they rise at all today or you are worried ring A & E.At least see your doctor tomorrow and insist on further test, you need to know what type you are so that your medication can be sorted out and get control.

Hope you soon feel better and let us know how you go on.

Ann

TBH I think the man at the gym was right, it could be risky and he needs to act on the side of caution. (then again I live in a country that requires a doctors certificate to join a walking club!)

If you try to exercise with insufficient insulin then glucose levels and ketones can rise quickly. Thats actually how I caused the DKA that landed me in hospital at diagnosis.

Do keep a check of the ketones and glucose, 27mmol/l is extremely high and if ketones start to rise get someone to take you to A&E. Sanober's advice to keep hypdrated is right. I would be very careful about the alcohol, firstly it will dehydrate you and secondly if you aren't eating and getting ennough fuel to the cells you could become drunk much more easily. (again from personal experience I became very sick on a couple of glasses of wine not long before was diagnosed, couldn't understand why at the time!.)

Tomorrow, I think you should go to the doctor/nurse. As WJ ssuggests, insulin might be necessary.
Hopefully, you'll be able to get this sorted out quickly and the fortnight from hell will gradually become a memory.

I just wanted to say, how very grateful i am for all the advice,
I am going armed with great advice to my appt. tom
just so hope they agree to insulin, and the peptide test.

such wonderful people on here with so many personal experiences.

thank you all

alison xx :D

Hi Alison
Just wanted to say sorry you are having such a hard time. I really hope you get the help you need soon...and possibly by the looks of things the insulin!
Please don't exercise to try and get your sugars down now. If you have sugars in the 20's and exercise it is a sure fire way to bring on DKA, and you can get VERY poorly VERY quickly as the exercise speeds up the whole process massively ...So stay safe.
Make sure you see your team ASAP, as it sounds like you are in desperate need of help, you must feel terrible :(
Good luck with it all and hope you get the treatment you need soon ,to get in a better place.

Alliebee, It's good to read that the guy from the gym is aware of safe bg levels before and during exercise! :)

Time to go back to your clinic/gp practise and look at ways to reduce those levels, once you get them under control there are no reasons you why you can't return to the gym. Good luck!

I am so grateful that I joined this forum, I just woulnt have coped this past fortnight without all your support, and great advice, so much so that when I went to the clinic this morning, I was much better informed and able to talk in depth with my DN, who I have to say was marvellous.

I do start on insulin on the 13th, which at this point does come as a huge relief, have to record all my before meals readings until then. Although they have upped my glicazide she said she didnt think at this point it would do much, and go to the hospital for the full range of tests fasting tom.

Truly Im so grateful for all the messages,
Thankyou
Alison :D

alliebee - good luck with those tests, at least things are happening now, hopefully you will soon be able to control those bg levels, must have been a nightmare for you, so frustrating that no matter what you do those numbers are staying high.

Good to hear that you have a supportive DSN, things are looking a whole lot better already :) :)

All the best to you x

I know others have explained dangers of exercise at wrong time etc, but overall exercise is seen as a positive when your condition is alright to resume. I notice you mention joining gym "at a cost Im really going to struggle with" so as it was a staff member who said not to come back can you get a suspension on your membership? I'd begrudge paying if they say you can't use it! Locally I got my membership suspended for approx 8 months after a road accident so sometimes tthey can be flexible if you ask

Gappy thankyou, was a great idea,
Ive just rang them and explained the situation, and they have agreed to suspend until the new year, and ring them again if I have a problem.

I would never have thought of this. Has cheered me up so much, The nurse told me that I should be feeling a lot better withing the next couple of weeks, as soon as my readings are back down.

Cheers :D

:problem: When you start on Insullin just be careful of what you eat, should your blood sugar drop rapidly ,I put on 3 stone since I went on Insullin.DN didn't advise on what to eat if I felt a hypo coming on and I used to panic and eat biscuits etc . Do clarify with your DN and good lusk
