Just Been Diagnosed. I have some questions

I think I said earlier in the post. I was given the diagnosis on Tuesday. I don't know the levels at the moment, but I have to see the nurse for what I think is a HbA1c test on Tuesday. I will ask then.

I think I am probably clutching at straws with the whole neuropathy thing. I probably have something else too. The numbness I have had in my feet for the past 2 years may get taken seriously now, as I think feet are something they are supposed to keep an eye on.

I'll let you know how I get on.

Looking at some of the symptoms you describe, has the possibility of Parkinson's Disease been considered? There is no definitive test for it but is diagnosed based on symptoms and after other things have been ruled out. I've been there and have it together with diabetes type 2! A Neuro who specialises in movement disorders is the person to look at the possibility.

I have had a nightmare with dealing with neurologists. It is a very long story. The third neurologist I saw, in 2007, said I didn't fit anything he was aware of, but he said he and the neuropsychiatrist could find no evidence of a psychiatric or conversion disorder. He said ME/CFS was the best fit. I was sent to the ME/CFS doctor he said I didn't fit that either. I was sent to the National in Queens Square, London. They were awful. The first neurologist I saw there accused me of wasting their time. They had decided it was psychiatric even before I had been seen by them. It is too long to go into all of the detail.

As for Parkinson's diseases...My GP says there are elements that seem like it but other things that don't fit. He found things wrong, but said I don't fit the nice neat criteria neurologists look for.

I actually think I am grasping at straws by thinking it is diabetic neuropathy, but there again some of my problems maybe. I was reading that type1A diabetes is associated with GAD antibodies, there is a neurological condition associated with them too, it is called Stiff Person Syndrome. It very rare, but is associated with diabetes. I don't know if it is routine to check for GAD antibodies in someone as old as me? My understanding is it is normally assumed that older people who have diabetes have got type 2.

I went for my HbA1c blood test this morning. I'll get the results next week when I see the diabetes nurse. My blood glucose was 7.9 when it was checked a couple of weeks ago. I think this only just makes me diabetic.
