Am Type 1 ( only since august 2015 so still learning). Have been up since midnight being violently sick (& upset tummy too). Blood sugar was a bit high before bed (8.0) & is now 6.7. I've checked for ketones & am on the + (1.5) pale pink level ( which I think is ok?). Am sipping water but not sure if there's anything else I should do? I'm on my own so a bit uneasy!

Thank you. It's the first time I've been ill since diagnosis & I didn't know how my blood sugar would react. Have stayed stable around 7.1, stopped being sick and looks as thought ketones have dropped to the 0.5 level. Will ring DSN at 09.00. Thank you for the reply (7 the link)Hi Jane. Sounds rough, pal. I ma afraid I am not Type 1 myself, but sometimes a response triggers others and hopefully you will hear from someone with directly relevant experience very soon. It sounds to me like an infection/bug independent of your diabetes (particularly if blood sugar levels were not too high. Your ketone level is ok. My understanding is that you should firstly not eat anything (pretty sure water is good...as you will be dehydrated from vomiting. I would definitely call your doctor first thing, just to get a professional view. I have attached a link which should help. I absolutely wouldn't panic - sounds like a bug kicking the bejeezus outta your system, and my concern would be what meds you are on and whether you are taking what you need at minimum and are holding it down. Anyway, sorry not to be more helpful...but I didn't want you feeling totally on your own with no answers at all. You'll be ok...honest! keep checking blood sugar levels every 3 hours or so...to at least reassure you. Do please let me know how it goes. Here's the link. hugs Paul

Thank you. I'stayed stable at 6.7 all night. Ketones seem to be 0.5 now and no more sickness. The sick day advice ( that I've read) confused me because it said to eat carbohydrate snacks ( including ice -cream and fizzy drinks which I never touch ) so I was afraid of going really low because I'd been so sick and couldn't eat. Just washed out now with very sore throat ! Will ring DSN for advice. Thank you for replying.Hi @Jane! while a urine ketone isn't that accurate, ketones of >1.5 means a severe illness for a type 1. As you are newly diagnosed and not familiar with sick day rules please call 111 for advice.
The sick day rules provide:
Where ketones 1.5 -3 (+ -++):
http://www.leicestershirediabetes.org.uk/uploads//documents/Type1_Sickdays_LDC_JAN2015.pdf - see p 6-7 and 9. It's fine to call 111 for advice. I'm sure you will be fine (your blood sugar isn't that high, your ketones may not be as high as the urine test suggests, but you are really vommy & it's going to be difficult to get rid of the ketones without a correction & if you aren't confident doing that yourself seek emergency medical advice via 111) but the fact is you don't know what to do and ketones can be dangerous, you need some support - it's also fine to just go to A&E.
- Sip sugar free fluid 100ml hourly
- Test blood glucose and ketones every 2 hours
- Calculate total daily dose from previous day
- Give 10% of total daily dose every two hours until ketones under 1.5
- Give background insulin as normal - never stop taking basal
- If you continue to vomit, are unable to keep fluids down, or are unable to control your glucose or ketones, you must contact the hospital as an emergency
Hope you are feeling better soon.
