Diagnosed with Type 2 a few months ago. Thought I was doing OK. Cut out the chocolate etc. Nurse was quite happy with my diet etc..

However bought a blood sugar tester at the weekend. Tested myself many times since then 2 hours after meals. Scored around 12-13 each time. This morning tested myself as soon as I got up. Scored 9.6. When I got into work had a bowl of Special K with semi-skimmed milk. Two hours later tested myself and got a 16.4. Totally confused but this. Any thoughts anyone?

Hi Peter and welcome to the forum, for a type 2 on diet only control it is not sufficient to just out sweets and chocolate you will need to reduce your carbohydrate intake as it is carbohydrates that raises your blood sugar, all carbohydrates are turned into glucose. Have a read of the 'Information for new diabetics' posted in the Greetings and Introductions board.

75g of every 100g of Special K is carbohydrate so its not very surprising your blood sugar reached 16.4. If you had the manufactuers typical quoted 30g helping (most would have more I suspect) with 125ml milk you would be consuming 28g of carbohydrate not counting the sugar sprinkled on top.
Why not give something else a try such as egg on toast, unsweetened yoghurt & nuts, glass of milk. That''ll fill you up until lunch and let us know what the bs reading is this time.
