Hi everyone my name is Liz and I have just been diagnosed with type 2. My last fasting level was 8.1 and obviously needs to come down some.

I had my first visit to the Diabetes nurse and was given some information regarding food intake etc. I also have to lose about 4 stone.....I quit smoking Christmas eve last year and its been a hard slog and hasn't helped my sugar intake

One of my problems at the moment is really badly swollen feet and ankles. They are like it when I wake up and gradually get worse as the day goes on. Not sure if this is common among people with Diabetes or not but it isn't something I have suffered with before apart from long flights.

Anyway I just wanted to introduce myself and am looking forward to getting to know you all better :D

Namaste

Liz

Hi Lizzie

Welcome to the forum, sorry about your diagnosis. But it could be a whole lot worse and this is a good forum where you can learn lots about diabetes and how to control it whist still living life to the full.
Have you mentioned your swollen ankles to your doctor? Has this just started happening since your diagnosis? There are lots of reasons for swollen ankles. from varicose veins to being overweight and side effects of medications and some illnesses too, so get this check out please, and keep your legs elevated as much as possible, put a few pillows or a rolled up quilt at the foot of your mattress so that your legs are higher see if that makes any difference.

I hope all goes well for you.

Hi Lizzie,

There is nothing to worry about Type2 diabetes, it is a condition, and if controlled properly, you should be able to do all the things you have done before within reason, as I have type 2 for over 4 years and by having a controlled diet, have not had to go on to tablets yet.

I am also a vice chairman of a local support group which is part of Diabetes UK, if you go to http://www.diabetes.org.uk you can find where your local group is.

At the meetings we have various speakers, and encourage each other, and help each other in regard to our condition.

Diabetes Uk also have a very good care line who will be able to help you about your feet, their phone number is 0845 120 2960.

There is also a very good book called Diabetes for Dummies, which you can buy from Amazon and this is extremely easy to read and will help you understand your condition a lot better.

All the best

Paul 50.
