I am just about at my wits end at the moment with my hubbies Type 2 diabetes. He started injections in April this year and we thought we were getting somewhere with it, but his is as thin as a rake and after having a virus last weekend, has lost even more weight. He practice nurse has carried out numerous routine blood tests and is now referring him to the 'gland clinic' although I'm not sure what that is. We went on a course earlier in the year to educate us on the transfer to insulin and the diabetic nurses were very concerned aboout his weight loss and suggested he may need to change insulin (he's on Insulatard, 20 units in the morning and 10 at night), but the practice nurse won't hear of altering it because his Hbac! has come down to 57 from 72. He is tired all the time, goes to sleep in the chair every night and has little energy for anything. His BS readings have improved by eating LCHF, but he looks dreadful and I don't see any light at the end of the tunnel. I'm sorry to burden on this onto this thread but I just don't know what to do as his quality of life at the moment is pretty poor.

the referral to a gland clinic is the best and I hope they can sort it out for your husband, it must be a worry.
just my opinion..and discuss it with his Dr
more insulin in the way of mealtime insulin..the insulin normally puts on weight because the body is getting the glucose metabolised for energy, he could uses a meal time insulin and eat more carbs. carbs are good for putting on weight.
if his kidneys are ok, you could increase the protein which will also builds weight too

have you used my fitness pal or another food counter to work out if he's eating enough?
most people find it hard to eat enough fats on LCHF .. to get their total calories..
google fat bombs and bulletproof coffee

Hi @kittyvcat1,

Sorry to hear about your OH. You must both be so worried.

A specialist in gland disorders is called an Endocrinologist.
What Does an Endocrinologist Do?
The glands in a person's body release hormones. Endocrinologists treat people who suffer from hormonal imbalances, typically from glands in the endocrine system. The overall goal of treatment is to restore the normal balance of hormones found in a patient's body. Some of the more common conditions treated by endocrinologists include:

  • Menopause
  • Diabetes
  • Metabolic disorders
  • Lack of growth
  • Osteoporosis
  • Thyroid diseases
  • Cancers of the endocrine glands
  • Over- or under-production of hormones
  • Cholesterol disorders
  • Hypertension
  • Infertility

As you are being referred I would see your G.P. and stress that you need an urgent appointment for your husband as his condition needs immediate attention. Push for it and don't take no for an answer.

Hope things improve soon.
