Hi I have been lurking for a few weeks and thought I should probably lift my head above the parapet and introduce myself
(although I will probably go back to lurking after this haha) I am 46 female and a house wife and mother to 14 yr old boy
I have been diagnosed since June 2nd 09 with T2 – I was admitted to hospital with severe stomach pains that turned out to be diverticulitus with complications and abscesses on my bowels, it was then with a bg of 18 they discovered I had diabetes
The hospital went in all guns blazing and had me on a sliding scale ended up on insulin a 5-minute chat with DN and a 3-minute chat with dietician was discharged after 6 days. Had a nasty hypo while on sliding scale as my glucose feed came out of my arm while I was asleep but was still getting the insulin - god know where I would be now if it hadn't been for the old dear across from me noticing I was being very strange  - still at least now I can recognise a hypo
Went to see my GP as was totally confused and fed up – he went a bit crazy about what the hospital had done – said he would have started me on diet alone and seen how I got on – he said the high reading were probably down to infection – that hospital should know that. – anyway – He got me off insulin onto highest dose gliclazide and metaformin twice a day and continued to reduce.
As of today I am on 1 x 80g gliclazide and 1 x 500g Metaformin at breakfast and dinner. I am 4 and half stone lighter down 3 dress sizes and feel 10 years younger and better than I have felt for donkeys years
. Hba1c 7.3 (aiming for lower next time) Cholesterol of 4.3. Normal blood pressure and all other checks spot on. On reflection although I would rather not have it I have decided that getting this thing is probably the best thing to happen to me and has given me a big wakeup call health wise
I don’t low carb but do try to stick to below 150g per day – but still eat all the usual suspects like potatoes, rice etc
I have learned a lot from this site and the lovely people on it so thank you very much all of you, I am very lucky that my GP and DN are forward thinking than most seem to be and do not promote the “plenty of carbs” line but recommend watching carb intake.
Well that’s me – if you have read the end of my waffling well done & thank you very much :0)
Lovinglife (Jac)
