I've been a Type 1 Diabetic since I was 11, that was 53 years ago and I am 64 this year. I've seen a lot of changes in the medical management of my diabetes, taking my blood sugars is now so much easier and so immediately accurate than all those years when we could only do it with a tablet in a urine sample, control was much more difficult in those days. But I've never been one to be held back, not by anything. I am on Insultard and Humalog. My HBA1cs are less than 5%. I still play competition Badminton twice a week, walk with the dogs every day, cycle and kayak and enjoy everything and every activity that I have wanted to do in life.
My advice is to run your body and listen to it like a finely tuned sports car, do blood tests whenever you are unsure of your condition, listen to friends and colleagues when they say "would you like a drink or something to eat" always keep some sweets with you and just go out and do everything you want to do.
