I am 46 and diagnosed with type 2 nearly 5 years ago.
My dad who lived in Dublin discovered he was diabetic in his late 50’s and unfortunately passed away aged 62 due to other health issues complicated by diabetes. The day he passed away was Dublin Marathon Day 2001 so my wife and I decided to raise money for Diabetes UK & Ireland by walking the Dublin Marathon in October 2008. Ironically when I returned from Dublin I discovered I too had type 2 diabetes after thinking the large weight loss and constant thirst over the previous 6 months was due to training for marathon!!
Since then I have had ups and downs with medication, diet (I just love food and lots of it) and coming to terms with diabetes in general. One year ago with increased levels of Lantus and Humalog I was having constant hypos and felt very unwell. I was really scared and thought the best thing to do (without medical advice) was to stop the Humalog and reduce dramatically the Lantus and stopped monitoring. I was feeling a lot “better” and no hypos but over time other problems started like loss of feeling in my feet, severe cramping in my feet/legs all the time, weight gain and always tired.
I went back to my doctor last week and now starting again (last Hba1c was 12.8) but it is hard as my favourite things in life are food (the wrong types), chocolate and diet coke. I am not a fan of healthy living and always over weight. I work away living in a hotel 3/4 days per week so I have all the excuses NOT to be good.
My wife is at the end of her tether trying to help me and just does not know what to do with me or for me!!!
Onwards and upwards – and any advice welcome on how to get through this
