Trying to find out in advanced a bit more information before I book my pre pregnancy clinic appointment .

What did/do you eat during pregnancy , each meals ? Snacks ? Ect .

Your pre meal readings need to be 5.9 or below and 2 hours post meal 7.9 or below. So slow releasing carbs worked best for me at the beginning and I found generally I could eat the same as pre pregnancy but had to just be more strict with my carb counting as couldn't afford to go high.
As I went further into my pregnancy my insulin requirements rose alot so ended up having to have less and less carbs to avoid those spikes. By the end i hardly had any carbs as it was so hars to stay on top of bloods. Meats, veg, cheese, eggs, nuts were my best friends! I cut out white bread and pasta and switched to whole grain, only had sweets when hypo and literally had just the amount I needed to get me to 5, no binging when low as I used to! I literally had my meals and no snacks to try and keep my sugars stable. Check the packs for the sugar content too as you might be surprised to wafts in done things. I love rice crispies for example but Kellogg's have 9g of sugar whereas Aldiss own has 2.9. There bran flakes have 5g I couldn't believe bran flakes had more!

Thank you so much that is brilliant information for me . Makes a lot of sense too .
Could you honestly say that you was able to keep your bloods between theses ranges all through out ?
Also if you don't mind me asking how many bms did you end up doing daily and when ?
Congratulations on how well you have done during your pregnancy and congratulations on having your new baby

I got my pre meal readings down to 5.9 or below but I really struggled with my post meal ones, as one dr was telling me it was 1 hour post meal and obviously insulin is still active a long time after that so if I got it down I would end up hypo. Then the DSN was telling me 2 hours post meal, which was easier to reach to 7.9 when eating low carb foods but difficult with lots of carbs so I found low carb was the only way I could do it.

I know it's such hard work but you will be so glad you've done it and its not for the rest of your life. The only thing that kept me focused was knowing I was doing the absolute best for my baby xx

Defiantly confusing when your getting told two different things and your trying to do your best .
I've heard a lot about this low carb , and really sounds like it does work , I guess you will try to prepare as much as you can but will never know Untill your in the situation then can change ratios ect accordingly . So did you bm pre meals post meals and bed time . Or In between what about during the night . It's brilliant to get advice from someone who has done it already . Sorry for all the questions . Must be annoying lol !! I'm the same I want to do whats best for the health side of things , and literally do all I can . I hope I can do it . :):):)

I found that my insulin resistance was very much worse in the morning, towards the end I could not tolearate carbs before noon at all. I ended up eating low carb bread (livlife) for breakfast with a low carb topping eg cheese, ham, eggs. I'd have soup for lunch, a mid afternoon snack of maybe fruit or toast and a 'normal ish' dinner. I did experience massive insulin resistance towards the end, but just injected more and more! Then you end up chasing your own tail eating to avoid hypos - Ended up putting on 3 stone and still struggling to lose it now 9 months later so don't necessarily recommend this but it kept the baby safe as she was born healthy, healthy weight which was all that mattered at the time. So I'd say don't go low carb but avoid getting on the insulin-hypo-carb rollercoaster if you can.

Thank you so much , for your reply , everything you said has really helped me , I got my first pre conception clinic on Tuesday , spoken to my nurse and from my bloods ect told me I was ready to go , as she was my child diabetic nurse lol . But I want to wait to get everything perfect and see her and get all the knowledge I can , I am already insulin resistance in the mornings now and I'm not even pregnant lol . Guess it will be a wait and see what happens .
Was you on the pump or injections if injections what sites did you inject in whilst pregnant .?
Thanks again .

Hi cloe, congratulations on getting the go ahead to start trying for a baby.

I had my daughter 3 years ago and had a relatively easy pregnancy apart from horrendous morning sickness which I was hospitalised for. My Hba1c was down to 5 by the end of the pregnancy but a lot of this was down to constant hypos to try and keep within the recommended targets. My daughter was born at 38 weeks weighing 7lbs 8oz. We are now trying for our second baby so have been trying to get myself super healthy! I'm on a pregnancy multivitamin and 5mg folic acid. My Hba1c is 6 and I have started eating low carb, no more than 100g a day and I have to say its amazing for my blood sugars. I test first thing in the morning and always have my breakfast bolus before stepping out of bed, usually 1/2 hour to 45 mins before I eat and this makes a huge difference to post meal spikes. I then test again 1.5 hours later and do the same before each meal and afterwards. I also test in the night and any other time I feel a bit odd! I have to say it's all about testing and your dr should prescribe extra strips if you tell him your trying for a baby.

Good luck and feel free to ask away if you need any more info x

Thank you so much , yes spoke to her and her exact words where go pregnant darling as she heard my hba1c . But like I said I just want to be 100 % sure , so want to see her first lol . Congratulations on your first daughter and loads of lucky wishes for your 2nd .
By reading what you have just explained I feel I'm doing rather well . I have worked out that doing my breakfast and dinner 40 mins prior to eating and 15 - 20 mins with my lunch , and I'm in goal with the 1 hour after meals . I have been in target with most of bms , have had the occasionally high , but have brought It back down as quick as it went up . That's good to know about the doctor should prescribe more test strips . She was the one who put me on folic acid so she should understand . At the moment I'm doing pre and post meals and bed time bms . Then if I need to . So on a daily basis doing 7 with out fail . I'm very very very excited about tuesday and so is partner .
The other reason I want to wait is I haven't been on folic acid for three months yet so will state this Tuesday . But even if I have to wait a few more months as been on that a month now . It's worth it , and to know your more ready than not is an amazing achievement were very excited .
Nervous but excited . Thank you for your support .
Are you on injections or pump ? If your on injections , I am , where did you inject whilst pregnant ?

Thanks again :):):)

Sorry me again lol , how did you cut so many carbs out , what food have you eaten to be able to of done that , to try and give myself some ideas if you don't mind .

:):):)

I was on injections with my daughter but been on a pump now for 18 months. I injected everywhere but once I got big I didn't do them in my tummy.
An example of what I eat In a day is:

Breakfast: 25g chopped nuts, 40g strawberries/blueberries/raspberries ( these are the lowest carb fruits) 100g soya yoghurt ( thought it would taste awful but it's actually yummy!)

Lunch: salad with chicken/ham/cheese, soup, eggs. Sometimes I'll have some rice cakes or low carb bread.

Dinner: stir fry, frittata, chicken with veg, salads, fish and veg. Sometimes I'll include a sweet potato or some brown rice.

Snacks: fruit, dark choc, veg sticks and humous, homemade low carb cakes.

There are loads of low carb recipes on the net. Just make sure you don't cut the carbs drastically straightaway and always make sure you eat plenty of protein and healthy fats so you body has energy from somewhere. Google low carb diets and you will find out more on that.

Well done on the great Hba1c and sounds like your doing great already.

Thank you for all the brilliant tips ,
dinner , is roughly what I'm eating now , chicken and veg , I'll sometimes add brown rice or three new potatoes ,
Stir frys I will have . Soups . Omelettes .

Breakfast will be a big change as at the moment I'm having porridge lol . And lunch time rivitas lol .

Are you on the pump to try for your second baby , or have you just generally gone onto this ?

I shall also have a read up on the internet .
Thank you so much I will still try to bring it lower but overall a good reading .

:):):)

I used to eat porridge a lot but found my sugars would go high an hour after then plummet after two hours resulting in me needing to eat again. It doesn't have to be yoghurt, I would say eat to your meter. Try different foods and see how they work for you, everyone is different. Do you carb count? One thing I find that seems to work when I eat carbs is to add some fat to the meal and it stops the spike. Maybe you could add some butter/cream cheese to the rivitas.

One of the main reasons I went on the pump was because I knew we were going to try for another baby and everyone says it helps. I was honestly ready to throw it away after the first month and it has taken about a year to get to grips with it but now I would never be without it.

When we decided we wanted another I came of the pill three months before and started taking the folic acid. I found that my blood sugars were different when I came of it so wanted things to settle and know where my sugars were before we went for it.

Yeah , brilliant advice , really handy hearing from others experiences . I do carb count yes , and I normally have a squirty cheese or dairy lee cheese on my rivitas , so that seems to be another good thing . That's a good tip , too add the small amount of fat alongside the carbs .

I've heard a lot about the pump , but ima bit of a wierdo having it in me 24/7 hmm lol , I'm so happy it works for you . I feel if others have done it on injections I'm hoping I can too .

You've answered all my questions haha !! I've been told to stay on contraception for now , so she said that and then to try, so confused anyway bring on Tuesday lol , so I am still on my pill , I was wondering what it does to your blood sugars once off it , I take my last pill Monday then see her Tuesday , so im thinking I will be told to stop It , so with the two months of folic acid left will have that time too manage it and see what changes .
Did your bloods drop or go high . Can not wait to find out more on Tuesday . Hopefully things will be a lot clearer

That was my biggest worry that put me off going on the pump for so long but I thought what the heck lets give it a go and I can always give it back if I don't like it!

Initially my sugars went up. Typical when's it the most important time to have good control! They then dropped at around 9-12 weeks and steadily rose again until the end when I was taking triple the amount of insulin and really couldn't cope with any carbs.

Good luck for Tuesday, exciting times!

Yeah I just don't know never warmed to the idea of the pump lol . Just something about It lol .

Oh no lol !! That must of been worrying / annoying with the rise in blood sugar , like you say especially at that crucial stage !!
Just such a big thing to do , and for you to go and do it all again , with trying for a 2nd makes me think , hopefully I can do it the first time aswell .

It's very exciting times yes , but also very nerve racking , im already nervous not even started or been to the clinic yet lol .
But I know I will do all i can to be healthy .

Fingers crossed ,

:):):)
