Hello!
I've just registered, having been looking around the site for a couple of weeks. I suppose it's not a unique story but I was diagnosed with Type 2 less than a month ago when my GP did a blood test for something else! I should probably have been expecting it, as my Mum had it for a couple of years before she died, but I wasn't. So now I'm taking 3 x 500 metformin a day and suffering the ill effects in a big way.
After zero advice from my GP apart from "come back in six weeks time for another blood test", I'm finding my own way, and have found this site to be very informative. Thank you!
My nearest hospital runs an educational session for newly diagnosed, but I've discovered it is full for the rest of the year - and anyway it is only available on a Thursday afternoon which is not convenient.
So, with my heart in my mouth, I'm taking control. I've bought a monitor and started testing. Now I just need to adjust my diet. I don't need to lose a lot of weight, thankfully, so my first steps have been to cut out the obvious sugars and replace white carbs with brown ones. For example, my lovely home-made seeded bread has changed from 10% wholemeal to 70%. It's not much, but it's a start.
Thanks for listening.
