I was wondering how many of the forum members here (applies to the UK) use the forum on DUK?

I found this place before I found that place and I never bothered joining up there as I felt I was getting all I needed from this place. Given that DUK is the national charity and DCUK is not, it is interesting that the volume of "traffic" is much higher here.

Now I guess it could be argued that there are fewer active posters there because they get all the answers they want and live happily ever after or could it just be that this forum is provding something that is unique and cannot be found anywhere else?

So..if you're here, why are you here? Why not at the charity that is for those with Diabetes, what are the issues that bring people here, keep them here? Am I correct in surmising that this is one of the best (if not THE best) forum for diabetics going on the very basic data that I can understand, the user numbers online at any one time? (Not forum members in total..I know that is different).

And before it gets said No, this is not a knock at the charity. It is a reasonable question. Thanks.

EDIT-Oops, getting all ahead of myself there. For those who use both forums, what are the advantages and disadvantages of both? Trying to get a clear picture in my frazzled brain.
 
Thought I'd respond to your post. I've never been on DUK forum, but I did subscribe to the org. got my Balance mag every 3months.

Well, I have just stopped my subscription as I felt for me that I wasn't getting the best info, advice etc. I began to find the the magazine was repeating topics that I'd read years ago when I first was diagnosed. So not much new.

Far mor advice and support for me here. But I guess that it's all down to individual choice. DUK though follow the pary line.

Good question ladybird. For me, it's because fundamentally the charity seems to have to follow NHS guidelines on dietary advice which, for most of us, doesn't give us the results we need. It seems to be a case of "our hands are tied" or "we don't want to know". Everything I do which has given me succesful BG control has come from dietary advice on this site and general research. I believe that when members try us, take our advice, and see BG levels that they haven't before, they stay. On the other site, if they don't get results, they go. Hence lower traffic. Speaks volumes for this site compared to that.
I don't post on the other site so can't give you the benefits.
 
I went to 'the other side' before finding this far superior forum. I visited the others on the recommendation of our DSN for recipes. Most of the recipes contained large amounts of sugar and I was quite amazed at the sort of foods they were promoting for diabetics (low carbing aside) and I found this site by accident when I mistyped the other side's website address.

If I hadn't found this site, MH's levels would have continued to rise and I hate to think where we'd be now. This is the best place for advice on all aspects of diabetes. I'm not a diabetic but the advice on here has helped my hypothyroidism too.

I looked at the one you have highlighted. Just to check I just looked at it again. 8 members and 39 guest online..significantly less than this one.
Maybe that is the reason there are fewer "squabbles"..however I don;t want to debate that. You have answered my question.

I like the idea of a Forum meet up though (stolen from http://www.diabetessupport.co.uk/boards ... ay.php?f=2). I bet we'd all be much nicer to each other if we knew the people behind the Avatars.

Although the catering would be a nightmare - we'd have to have separate tables for the VLCers, the GI lot and the portion controllers (and a small paddock for Grazer).

Sounds like an idea. Yes, the catering would be hellish, who ever got the job would pray we didn't come back. I just hope the food would stay on the plates, and not flying around the room at each other. :lol:

I am a member of DUK and I also get the magazine, but I am not a member of the forum. I joined this one as I found it by chance and after reading some of the results people were getting, along with the support, made it my diabetic home. Sure there are ups and down's it's life and I think some people could take forum life to seriously. I don't include the support in that, but feathers seem to ruffle easily sometimes, even my own have now and again, then I remind myself I just click log off, and and irritating poster/post/discussion what ever it may be, goes poof into cyber land and not into my real life. Simples.

Book a place for a meet then Stephen, I will start collecting rotten tomato's. :lol:
 
No experience of the DUK site although I do view it from time to time, there's often a good banter on there and the discussions are not always about diabetes........ which I think is a good thing. The forum meet-ups which Stephen mentions shows they are a friendly bunch of people and quite content with their lives and people around them.
 
I was wondering about a forum meet up.. Sunday lunch in the middle of the country (sorry, but we would have to start with one country so I'm thinking the UK). A carvery perhaps - the non low-carbers could have our spuds and we could all eat lots of veg.

Is that such a daft idea? - might stop some of the arguments.
