I'm type 2 and live in Bangkok. Over here there's no such thing as National Health so you have to pay for everything. Having said that, it seems to me that it's not too expensive. I thought that I'd share my experience of treatment here.
I just got back from my appointment with the doctor (speaks great English). My blood sugar reading was 7.0 which is the best I've had. My fasting reading using my meter (One Touch Ultra) one hour earlier at home was 6.3 so there's quite a difference between my meter reading and the blood test at the hospital.
He also did a urine test to check for early signs of a reaction to the kidney's to taking Metformin (mircob...sorry, can't remember the exact name). The result was that everything's ok (phew!).
Anyway, the cost for my appointment with the doctor (had quite a long chat and my wife wanted to be there to grill him too), a blood test, a urine test and two months of Metformin tablets was GBP25. Seems really cheap.
One of the great things is that, after you give your blood and urine samples, then you can go downstairs for breakfast (having fasted since midnight) and get all your results one hour later and discuss them with the doctor.
The testing strips are GBP20 for 50 and the needles for the meter test are GBP10 for 100.
All in all I'm very happy with the way and cost of getting treatment over here.
Just thought I'd share some good news.
