hi folks
I was diagnosed 3 moths ago due another blood test soon and put on Metaformin 500mg twice a day , initially I lost weight very quickly as went on a low carb diet . Nearly down to 9stone having lost 14lbs in 8 weeks , the last few days I have been eating all sorts of food , wedding breakfast and snacks cheese etc at work . I have started getting very bloated even just after eating one shortbread biscuit , today had a half portion of duck wrap with hoisin sauce and tonight cooked spag bolanaise but could only eat a small portion of meat no spaghetti. Once again tonight I feel awful , wind and painful abdomen . On top of that keep getting cramp in my feet when I go to bed. Drink water throughout the day , any ideas what I am doing wrong should I go to doctors , work very busy and full time so difficult to get time off. Is it lack of fibre? I do have a small portion of sultana bran for breakfast . Sorry for essay but getting to point where I don't want to eat !
Thanks everyone in advance great website .

I don't profess to be an expert but I do take Metformin and have had milder symptoms to the ones you describe on the rare occasions I increase my carbs. I have convinced myself that metformin and carbs don't mix!

I also wonder if the cramps could be lack of salt? Its good that you keep hydrated with plenty of water, but when low carbing we do need to keep our salt intake up, especially during the early days. A cup of warm Bovril or a stock cube dissolved in hot water or bone broth is usually enough

Congratulations on your great weight loss. That's a terrific result in a short time.

Night cramps is usually due to an electolyte imbalance, and probably low sodium. The diabetic bloods panel normally checks both sodium and potassium.

Yep, Metformin is known to give gastric probs, especially if not taken with some food, but yes, increasing carbs can trigger wind etc. Also, have you increased your fat intake recently, especially from dairy foods? That can sometimes give wind, I find full fat double cream makes me rumbly.

Thank you , yes y low carb diet went out of the window last weekend and since eating biscuits at work , in a job where we have reps coming in with lunch and cakes ! Very nice but have to learn to say no . Will bear that in mind with salt I very rarely add salt to my diet cooking veg or on food . Last night made conscious effort to drink a glass of water before bed , and just had a glas of water this morning . I always take Metformin after food as my brother told me it can make you feel sick .
Due a blood glucose test now so will be interesting to see if my levels have dropped , have no idea what they were so will ask nurse .
Have a good day thank you , off to work again!

I suffer with mild gastro symtoms on metformin. But if I fall off the low carb waggon I Def need to be at home. Esp when I had white pitta and a cream cake after an ext bad day!
I beginning to realise that metformin doesn't do carbs.
