Hello everyone

Please can you tell me where to buy Kefir and how much does it cost.
Is the main benefit to aid digestion or is there more than this?

Kefir grains cost on average £5 or so, they are very hard to kill off and last you a life time.

Where do you live, I have some kefir grains to give away as well,below are some links that I found very helpful and informative, each site has a section on why kefir is good for you.

Hi ladies.

I am on the Newcastle Diet - or, rather, struggling with it, and after 2.5 weeks when I lost a lot of weight, I've had a bit of a lapse, but am now doing a high fat/protein, low carb diet. But...I'm re-thinking all of this, again, and thinking...what do I need? I'm wondering about kefir, as I grew the stuff last year, and was fascinated by it. But I'm really wondering re. weight loss and T2D management...what people think of it. I've lost 25 pounds - I'm fluctuating between 25 and 27 pounds since Jan 3rd. Not sure what I'm going to do next re. weight loss, but I've got another 80 pounds to go, and this is going to take awhile. Trying to reverse T2D. Thoughts on the carb load of a kefir 8 oz drink? And other merits?

hi,

i have had kefir and think it similar to yoghurt, but runnier. best way is to try and test but i think it's about 8g per cup
 
Interesting thread as I haven't heard of this before. I have had a look on the internet and the benefits of Kefir seem very interesting.

Sounds similar in some ways to Indian Lassi but not sure if the make up of it is the same.

Kefir - Now your talking!

A breakfast staple of Scandinavia, the baltics & Eastern Europe. Slightly more sour than natural yogurt but once you acquire a taste for it you'll never go back.

Head to the fridge section into any Polish/Eastern European foods shop, you'll be able to pick up a massive multipack (about 6 large bottles) for around the £3 mark.
 
Got the Kefir when I did my weekly shop today. Do you guys have it just on its own for breakfast or with your standard breakfast?
 
When I was in Latvia, they were drinking it like a small glass of milk, so that's how I had it, after I had my breakfast and took with vitamins (a bit like I would used to have a glass of juice). I guess you could also pour over nuts, seeds or berries too.

Kefir is also really good for digestion - as it is a fermented product, it has loads of good bacteria. I have purchased it from the cold polish section in ASDA.

Am sure there'd be nothing wrong with having it as a drink on its own either, also, I bet it would make a nice smoothy!

Interesting thread. I've been having skin problems for ages(adult acne and rosacea) and I've always had stomach problems and suffer with IBS (although I believe it may be something a stage further but GPs seem very lax when I got to them with my ongoing tum problems). Anyway, sis-in-law sent me an article at the weekend about a farm quite local to me that produces goats milk products and they've had outstanding results. In the treatment you drink goats milk kefir. So glad I've read about kefir on here as well as I was a bit dubious. I'm still not sure whether it will affect sugars for T1 diabetes. Don't think so as it contains no lactose or anything added. I've contacted them but after the article they have been inundated with queries/orders, so much so they are looking a new admin helper. Raw milk is also meant to be good for you but not sure if it would still cause a spike
 
Kefir is an aquired taste. I bought some 5 years ago to see if it was a cheaper alternatve to buying Fage yogurt which helped my OH get rid of the dermatitis on his hands and flakey skin on his scalp. He dudnt like Kefir so ended up throwing it away after giving some to my neighbours. It looks like lumps of cauliflower floating on top of the milk as it grows in size as the milk turns sour.

Polish supermarkets sell it already made up into a yogurt
