Hi folks on Saturday I am taking part in the K2B Walk which is 40 miles. This will be my 3rd time, but my first time since being diagnosed as a diabetic, when asking what I should eat during the event I was told to forget that I was a diabetic for the day!!!! I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for me please.

Being in that area 'neck of the woods' you could take some small snacks to nibble along the way .
Keep your sugars steady and 'do test' your sugar levels when you are able to 'too'
For any low sugars a small bar of the fabulous well known kendal mint cake , easy
to break a square off and nibble when needed .

Hope this spell of lovely weather lasts and you enjoy the K28 walk .

Anna.

Hi Anna
I had forgotten all about the kendal mint cake, I remember that they give it out free at Lowick so I will have to stock up there....lol. Weather is looking wet wet wet, I'm taking my monitor with me so can check regularly....fingers crossed I will be fine.

Hello vjt66 .

Really do hope the weather turns drier for you tomorrow :)
Maybe a roll up kagool - just in case ?

If you prep well , less can go wonky eh .

Small snacks , your blood sugar meter , things for any blisters or sore feet
if possible ?
As 40 miles 'is' some lonnnng hike !!!

All our good wishes and support from DCUK .
Remember us as you walk , I will be thinking of you

When you have recovered , please update and tell us all about how things went .
Above all - please do remember to test and look after yourself whilst doing this K28 walk .

Yep a small bar of the kendal mintcake is ideal and just perfect to take along too

Hello Anna

Well I can say it was a grueller, but I have now regained the ability to walk again and most of my blisters have gone although it does look like I am going to lose a nail.

The weather was awful for the first 30miles but it faired up for the last 10, so at least I could change into dry gear.

I felt very good all through the day and I kept on testing throughout, I had increased carbs the night before but on the day my figures where good, highest being 6.8 and lowest at the end was 4.9. I took fruit, malt loaf with cheddar to snack on during the walk, but there is plenty of fruit and fluids at the checkpoints and I made full use of them.

My time was 12hours and 49 minutes to complete the 40 miles, but I did have to wait over 2hours for a friends daughter who was underprepared and had to give up after 26miles, she was suffering early stages of hypothermia, luckily she was picked up by a paramedic and we where all glad to hear she had recovered by the time we finished.

I have to say I am nutty enough to go for my 4th attempt next year and I have already been nominated as Team co-ordinator again, only because the rest can't be bothered with the organising.

Vic.

Well done you! Me and Mrs Bear would possibly be quite interesting in doing that ourselves, love hillwalking and the Lake District but not been there for about 10 years - is there an organisation behind this or was this something you organised yourself?

Wow u did a great thing well done and I am finding 3 miles 4 times a week head going.... You inspire me to walk more.....love the lakes :)

Hello Kat100 thank you for your kind comments, but believe me before I started doing this I wouldn't walk anywhere and I'm certainly not a fitness freak. I find having this event motivates me to get out though at 46 it takes a little longer to recover and my Wife thinks I'm bonkers. So stick at it because any exercise helps.

Vic.
