Can anybody recommend a good ketogenic book. Being very low carb I am 99% sure I am unintentionally ketogenic.

Unintentionally ? I thought the whole point with going low carb was ketosis? As opposed to running on glucose?

Hang on, I saw something recently, I'll be back.

Atkins, Dukan and tons of other Low Carb High Fat variations around this.

Yes, under 30grms of carb, you are in a ketogenic state. You can tell by your breath, or you could use ketostix to find out at what level you are, mildly or highly ketogenic.

Dr. B also explains about ketones in his book.

:)

I don't think Dr Bernstein is ketogenic. I have done a search in his book and nowhere does he mention ketogenic. I read somewhere that he said he had too much protein to be ketogenic and was surprised.

To be ketogenic you have to be very low on both carbs AND protein. Apparently you could be under 30g carbs and not be ketogenic if your protein intake is high.

It's 6 months since I read / started on his diet, since then I have found a need to cut back on protein (and increase fat) to keep my BG levels low.

Interesting isn't it.

He does talk about ketones in the book and also in his videos, have a look online (Im on my phone so cant give you the link) I have a kindle updated version which might be different from older versions. As far as I understand it, living out of fats is ketogenic if most of your calories are coming from fat. But I might be mistaken. Again, you can tell by your breath or using a ketostix if you are in nutritional ketosis.

Im doing what he says... Im well into ketosis... I was given ketostixs while I was in hospital. They are little strips they use to mesure levels in the urine.

Sorry... i replied to you in the wrong thread... On my phone now

Dr B references keytones a lot in his book, but this is not ketogenic. Keytones are dangerous when you have high BG levels. I had them on diagnosis and was admitted to hospital. Ketogenic is when the body runs off fat and not glucose. Complicated but interesting.... This is my understanding and why I thought I would try to learn more about it.

bersteins diet is ketogenic. A person in nutritional ketosis is in a ketogenic state. If blood sugar are normal, they aren't dangerous, that is the reason why he is explaining it because you will find ketones in your own urine if you test Dr. peter attiA's blog is a great resource about nutritional ketosis.

Ok, I'm back at home. apologies :)

Bersteins' approach is ketogenic, that doesn't mean that it will take you into Ketoacidosis (DKA), Ketoacidosis is what is dangerous, not ketogenic, ketogenic simply means that one is using fat as their main source of fuel.

I'm eating carbs 20grms a day (or more), I'm eating protein 3.5oz per meal, I have ketones in my urine, I am running on fat.

Can I have a look at what are you reading? The link you posted is about Peter Attias Ted talk that I forwarded before from another thread.
Just started to read this... Looks interesting. Author says adults eating 20g carbs and 75 to 150g protein are rarely ketogenic. Reading more on Dr B's Facebook page, apparently he does not intentionally go into ketogenic, but is not opposed to it.

I can't see how hecould oppose it. His approach is ketogenic. Or at least it is on me, maybe to other people is different. However, if that was the case, why does he goes on to explain that ketones are not dangerous? The whole point being, he knows one will find ketones in urine while following his protocol.

"I'm eating carbs 20grms a day (or more), I'm eating protein 3.5oz per meal, I have ketones in my urine, I am running on fat."

I believe this means that you have been ketogenic but not necessarily currently. Aparantly every person goes into mild ketosis every time they go without eating for 6 to 8 hours. Ketosticks only measure your state a number of hours back, not current. It is said that once your body has adapted to burning fat for energy urine testing is not accurate.

I have often used ketosticks, sometimes it shows a recording other time not..... Not conclusive.

I am not too worried whether I am or not, just like to know more about it.

Try the book 'The art and science of low carb living' by Vollek and Phinney.

It is a fascinating read, well researched, and very informative. I had been doing things because they worked, but the book explained why.

I pretty much live in ketosis, and sometimes I eat a lot of protein. But sometimes not. And rarely, very little.
I eat to my appetite, rather than counting things.
Works for me. ;)

That's the book I have just started to read... Looks interesting, it's the book where the author says "adults eating 20g carbs and 75 to 150g protein are rarely ketogenic.

I am on around 36g carbs and 100g protein. Pretty sure I am ketogenic, but not really worried whether I am or not..... Just interested

I had lunch :) ... but I agree its been said before it varies, some people says it gets washed out. I am definitely into ketosis, and it has showed everytime I have measured.
