Ketones and high blood sugars?

Hi all. Is it normal to have ketones whilst your blood sugars are high, or is it because I'm not well?
I've had an ongoing kidney infection for months now. Haven't had ketones, apart from yesterday when I tested my blood and it was 21! Tested my ketones and they were not low, not high, just in the middle. This never happens when my bs is normally running high. Could it be because I'm ill etc?

Hey Chloe - if you sugars are that high and you have moderate ketones it's probably best to call 111. It's not an emergency but could escalate if you don't know Type 1 sick day rules, so better to get professional advice if you're not sure what to do.

I think you should call 111 for the kidney thing. You could have a stone obstructing a ureter which is not good and could potentially damage the kidney. I've seen people call 911 for way less serious things. Plus, your "scan" isn't scheduled til the end of next month you said.

You have ketones because you have high blood sugar, you have high blood sugar because you are unwell.

Follow the sick day rules to correct the high and get rid of the ketones. If you are familiar with sick day rules or you aren't confident following them call 111 for advice.
