Pasta, sorry to me it's vile, yeuch lol (and full of nasty carbs)
Hi. I've been type 2 for 6 years and been on Humulin M3 Insulin for two years now. I have Ketostix and a Glucomen LX Ketone meter. I have noticed I consistently show ketone readings every time I test. On the blood meter it can range from 0.7 to 1.5 mmol/l. My FBG run from 5-7 mmol/l.

I am not low carbing and thought ketones and DKA were a Type 1 phenomenon. Any answers ? :)

24 hours later, plenty of views but no replies. I have had do to some reading on other sites but it's a subject that's new to me. I honestly thought someone on DCUK could have given me some pointers. Feel let down by the forum for the first time.

Thanks @robert72. I am on large amounts of mixed insulin. Maybe my pancreas is producing very little insulin now and my type 2 is advancing. I know type 1s are well clued up on DKA but my DSN mentioned it is not common in type 2 but I might be in a susceptible group. Anything from 0.6 to 1.5 says I might need more insulin and anything over 1.5 in a blood test and I should phone my diabetes team.

Ketones at that level would be a worry if you also had high blood sugars, on the basis that you didn't have enough insulin to clear them. They could escalate quickly whilst your body was breaking down fats to fuel itself whilst unable to make use of glucose. Nevertheless, best to call your DSN if she has given instructions to do so with those numbers.

The instructions and mmol/l ranges are on the tub of B-Ketone strips supplied with the Glucomen LX Plus meter. At what level do you consider requires attention @robert72 ? :)

It really depends on you blood glucose level when you see the ketones. Whilst 1.5 mmol/l isn't high (DKA happens in the 10-20 mmol/l range) it could be a warning that they could get worse quickly if you had insufficient insulin (hence high blood glucose).

I suppose the main question is why are you starting to see ketones if you are not low-carbing, off your food, doing a lot of exercise of consuming a lot of alcohol.

I don't drink alcohol and don't over exercise. I have lost weight recently but still have a fair appetite. My insulin regime is being upped from 1 unit per kg to 2 -3 units per kg. It's mystifying me, suppose a phone call to my DSN is needed.
