I was diagnosed a month ago and I have just been to the doctor today and took in a urine sample first time. She tested it while I was there and told me I had ketones (the colour wasn't the darkest on the chart, but the next one down from it 8? / 80? It had two numbers one above the other). She tested my BG which was 5.5. She said she was puzzled by the result, as she thought by BG should have been higher because of my ketone reading. I am trying to minimise the carbs in my diet, which I couldn't tell her that as according to her I should be eating 14 portions of carbs per day. Also when I went it had been 15 hours since I'd eaten actual food. All I had for my "breakfast" was a glass of orange juice, as I had got up late and didn't want to miss my appointment. She told me if I felt I'll (which I don't) to go back straight away to the doctors. I have been given some more strips to re test myself at home. She has now worried my with her last comment. Could it be the lack of carbs that's doing this? If so, is it dangerous to carry on restricting my carbs. My BG has come down since I have reduced the carbs so ideally wouldn't want to increase them.

I understand that long periods of fasting causes the breakdown of fat to give the body energy and the breakdown of fat causes ketones.

not eating for long periods is pretty hard core keto and is the same as a hunger strike :bag:
eating less than about 50g of carbs, normal protein and more fat will also produce a ketogenic diet and your body is running on ketones

Hi, thanks for the comments. It wasn't that I deliberately didn't eat. I can't eat breakfast, the thought of food makes me sick until I've been up a couple of hours. I usually just have a drink of orange. I've eaten since my last post, and re did the test which came out as normal :) I feel a bit relieved now. I'll do the test again tomorrow as she has asked, but I'll eat first.
