Hi everyone, this is my first post. I was diagnosed with Type 1 just before Christmas and am still getting my head around it all.

One thing I am confused about is that when I went into hospital with BGL of 32 I learned there were Keytones present and understood DKA was a dangerous thing. Now I’m reading about Keto diets where putting the body into a state of Ketosis is seen as a good thing. I’ve not been able to find an explanation of the difference. Can someone help me understand?

To give just a little more context: my initial consultation with the diabetes diateition recommended that I eat around 200g of carbs a day (30g for breakfast, 80g for lunch and 90 for eve meal) and to take 6, 8 and 10 units of novorapid respectively. I’m also taking 18 units of Lantus in the evenings. I’m feeling quite bloated, my tummy has swelled and I’m putting on more weight than I’m comfortable with. I want to exercise (I haven’t been able to for months) but I’m not confident since having hypos and am quite exhausted even from walking relatively short distances. So this is why I’m looking into these new diets.

I will have another consultation with the dietitian in a few weeks but I will be grateful for input from your experience.

Thank you x

"The main difference between ketosis and ketoacidosis is that with ketosis, you are making healthy choices that bring about the creation of ketones, but with ketoacidosis, your body is not working properly and the ketones in the blood are a sign of trouble."

This may help.Read the full article.
Welcome Sophie.

Hi @sophiesmiles
Not wishing to be picky but your descriptor below your user name says Type 2.
It would be worth updating this to Type 1 as advice is often best tailored around specific diabetes types.
You can amend this by clicking on your user name at the top of the page and going to the personal details page.

Thanks I’ve been trying to work out how to change this for the last 30 mins! Hopefully this is changed now...
