Hi Charlie,

If you've got moderate or higher ketones and high sugars you need to go back to hospital / A&E. The only other thing you can do is drink lots and lots of water / sugar free fluids.

Hi Charlie,

I had that problem a few months ago (although I didn't see a healthcare professional) as I had poor control of my diabetes. I would just try and concentrate on getting your sugars down and drink plenty of water and avoid exercising if possible. Is 4-19 normal for you or have you struggled to keep your sugars low? I only ask as I was told that when you have ketones in your body then you may have to take extra insulin to keep your sugars down. Have you been given help on how to count your carbs?

thank you for your reply yes i have always struggled to keep my sugars low and as for the carb count i have never been shown how to do that i was told i didnt need to.

I went on a DAFNE course last year and I can not express how much easier it made controlling diabetes. I was floundering along guessing how much insulin to take and then getting really angry and upset when it didn't work, either because my sugars were too high or too low. Speak to your DN or doctor and see if they can get you on the course. It really did help me and my levels are perect when I do it properly. (I must admit I did go off the rails recently but that's through my own laziness, so I have no one to blame apart from myself). Let me know how you get on and if your stuck or need help private message me and I'll try to help. But really push your DN or doctor, it's in your best interests and theirs!

Hi Charlie

Have you been given sick day rules to follow? If you have then they should tell you how much insulin to take to get your ketones on the way down, assuming your blood sugar is high too.

But they are too high so talk to your DSN or doctor or go to A & E.
