Hi my name is debbie and my daughter aged 15 has had type 1 for the last 13 years, but twice this year has had ketoacidosis and one is today, her bm is fine 7.8 but keytones has gone from 3.6 to 1.6 which is good i think, ive nearly drowned her for drinking fluids, bless her, she has refused hospital as last time it took two doctors 9 times to get a cannulae in her arm, does anyone here think the keytones will still come down ???

Hi Debbie

I don't know what BG your daughter started at or why she has ketones. I have needle phobia so completely understand why she doesn't want to go to hospital - however the new(ish) NHS guidelines say if she has +3 ketones she should seek medical advice.

Here are the guidelines:

Glucose: More than 14 Ketones: 0 -1 Take correction dose
Glucose: More than 14 Ketones: 1-3 Take double correction dose and repeat hourly until ketones less than 1
Glucose: More than 14 Ketones: Over 3 Take double correction dose as above and seek medical advice

Measure glucose and ketone levels hourly
Drink plenty of sugar free fluids
Retest ketones every hour until less than 1.

Hope she is feeling better

It sounds to me like they are coming back down again though...? If it were me I'd keep checking and as long as they were not starting to rise above 3 again, I'd definitely stay at home. Staying at home where she feels safe and can control the insulin she's using may well be better than going into hospital where it may be stressful - which can actually add to the rise in bg. Good luck!
