Lack of....

There is a very high lack of awareness, understanding, research funding... everything... but you kniw what really gets to me.. and what iv noticed in the last 10 years?? I rarely see charity boxes in shops aiding diabetesUK, including this 5p carrier bag charge... none gets donated to DiabetesUK.. Have also noticed theres charity shops all over the UK, cancer research, barnados, scope etc... but never,not once have i EVER seen a charity shop with a DiabetesUK sign above it..

I was willing to open up one myself, and work there, it would give me stability, would get volunteers, stock being donated, awareness would be raised, but also with donations rocketing, it would fund research massively.. But unfortunately DiabetesUK said they wont aid financially for fixtures and fittings, nor would the council be able to help with rent etc... so catch 22!! :@

Does anybody have any ideas or suggestions?
 
Tesco's have teamed up with Diabetes UK for the last year or more raising vital funds for diabetes research:

Also you can make voluntary contributions to charities such a DUK and JDRF to name a few.

Your idea of opening a charity shop to raise funds for diabetes research sounds like a great idea and should be applauded, but not sure where you could apply for funding to get things off the ground, hopefully other members might come up with a few suggestions, the only one I can suggest at the moment is a lottery grant.

While I deplore the lack of charitable donations being directed to diabetic research, established charities such as Diabetes UK cannot assist any Tom, **** or Harry in setting up what would be in effect a franchise or self employed business - the risk to their good name would be too great.

The council will not help you as you are not a registered charity.

The answer would be to set up your own charity (click).
 
It sounds a great idea, I have worked for three charities. The last one was Cardiac Rehab and I was assistant to the manager. It was one of the best jobs I have had and I was heartbroken when the shop closed. I have never seen a Diabetes charity shop :( and I always love to browse in these shops, such a worthy cause and a lovely atmosphere too.
