Hi everyone

Can I have a bit of basic advice about how often I should change the needle in my lancing device? I tend to change mine daily rather than on a test-by-test basis as this is more convenient.

My boss, who is also diabetic, never changes his needles until they wear out!

Some direction would be appreciated.

Thanks

Dave

The recommendation is to change it after every bg test, to be honest I just change mine once a day.

Many thanks for that. I'm assuming your fingers haven't dropped off or had terrible disease and pestilence as a result or you would not have been doing this.

I also think I'm going to need a sharps bin but am not sure how I dispose of them when they are full.

No my fingers are fine even though I've been pricking them for the last 28 years. Ask your gp surgery if they'll take your sharps bin or contact your local council.

I use a new one each time I test, I use the fastclix drum which has 6 needles in 1 drum so when used I just press a button and next is ready, 1 drum last 1 and a bit days.

I only change mine once a week and sometimes when I forget to do so I use the same lancet for a lot longer. Never had a problem so far but I guess I should have a set routine so that the needle gets changed more regularly. It's not as though I don't have many, thinking that I would need to change them for every test I bought 3 X 100 of the things to keep me going.

I have to add that I scrupulously clean my hands before I test so I don't feel that infection is an issue.

I used to change the lancet every test but my GP told me there was need to , so I change it when I remember - goash aint Im bad

Maybe just changing over to a fresh one before going to bed, along with taking meds as part of the daily routine.

Incidentally, I use those tiny alcohol swabs to clean my fingertip before lancing. Saves lots of handwashing and it sterilises the surface of the skin.

I never reuse mine but then again I don't pay for mine but dont like the idea of using it again for hygiene reasons.
