Lansoprazole

Last edited:
I am about to discuss this drug with my GP It workd by reducing stomach acid and so delays digestion. I find it is interferring with my morning gliclazide tab, and recently I have been delaying my glic tab till noon, and I am getting much improved effect from it. I suspect it also stops my vit B supplement, so I am considering moving those too.

I have seen research that indicates it can affect other meds too, and I think it may be upsetting my heart and BP meds as well. So I am thinking of asking my GP if I can take it last thing at night along with my Clopidogrel, which is why I am prescribed it in the first place.
Note: recent NICE guidelines substituted lansaprazole instead of Omeprazole since that one was proven to severely disrupt meds from working properly, including Warfarin and Clopidogrel. But I have experienced this with Lansaprazole too. The NICE jury is still undecided on Lanseprazole. but have accepted it as the default choice since it is the only one left in the arsenal.

The big problem with medication that almost no-one is talking about is how the almost infinite variety of them interact, both with each other and the underlying conditions for which we're taking them. It's almost impossible to know what effects there will be from mixing them up, but there are dangers for sure.

Happily, I've managed to give up taking Lansaprazole for a hiatus hiernia, as since I've lost weight, the problem seems to have gone away. I've also stopped my statins and blood pressure meds for the same reason, and the figures look good. So I'm just on a low dose of Metformin. My blood sugar is pretty good now, but I couldn't tell you if it's due to giving up the drugs or the LCHF diet, or losing weight. It's all so complicated!

@Oldvatr - if you haven't seen it already, you might be interested in Dr Kendrick's latest post on heart disease which discusses PPIs: https://drmalcolmkendrick.org/2016/09/21/what-causes-heart-disease-part-xxi/

On another diabetes forum I visit, a number of people have been diagnosed with severe B12 deficiency after long term metformin use - B12 deficiency seems to be yet another issue that medical people are ignoring and/or not taking seriously. Several people are having to fight just to get the recommended NICE guidelines followed. Scary stuff :(

I sometimes wonder how many people who think they have neuropathy are actually experiencing symptoms of B12 deficiency instead as they're very similar.

Hi. I have my annual visit to the vampire tomorrow, and I have requested that my GP orders me a B12 check as well as a full lipid panel. Will know later tomorrow.

As I understand things, B12 is not one of the easy ones to supplement orally, so if I do show deficiency then I will probably need injection by GP to beef it up. The Lansaprazole affecting vit B supplements is actually a side issue for me, but it certainly lowered the effectiveness of my Gliclazide dose. I was also taking Glic in the late afternoon and again in the evening, and these two doses both had significant bgl lowering effect, which the a.m. glic did not. Now I have stopped the afternoon Glic, and am also dropping the pm one too, I found the morning one that remained was doing B*****er all for me until I moved it to midday. So I put it down to my am Lansaprazole blocking the med absorption.

To follow on from this posting.... My GP has written me up for a B12 test and full lipids, so I saw the phlebotomist this morning and donated. Will not get the results back for at least 2 weeks due to staffing probs at surgery and lab. Also unable to get my meds review for about a month at least due to said problemo.

Update: GP has agreed to me shifting my dose time to last thing at night, so it is now written in stone on my scrip. The important one for me is that my B12 levels are well clear of the relegation zone, so neither Lansoprazole nor my long term use of metformin has affected my level at all. I have also had GP remove my morning Gliclazide tab and given the go ahead for me to play around with the remaining 2 tabs as I see fit, Currently i am down to1 a day, and one extra every 3 or 4 days just to tweak the levels.
