Hi,
I am writing to you from Washougal, WA. USA. I have just looked on the Prescription Cost Ananlysis database provided by the NHS and found the cost of Lantus to be 30.68 pounds. Can anyone tell me what the British citizen actually pays out their pocket for one vial of Lantus 10 mLs? Thank you. James.

as a diabetic on insulin or medication we are exempted from all prescription charges so £0.00
edit: Westie2 is correct (in England) in Wales & Scotland prescription charges have been abolished)

In the UK we pay National Insurance and Income Tax based on our individual incomes, these together with other taxes fund the NHS. Diabetics are entitled to free prescriptions as the medication is required as a permanent replacement therapy, so the direct cost is NIL, as we fund through both direct and indirect taxation.
There are a number of other exempt groups including age, income. Non exempt patients pay a standard charge per item which bears no relation to the cost of the medication, they can purchase a prepayment certificate which helps reduce the cost to the individual.

I hope this has helped clarify and answer your question.
