Lantus dosage

I am a type 2 diabetic on insulin. I currently take Novorapid (4 units at breakfast, 8 units at lunch and 16 units at dinner) and lantus 46 units at night. I also take metformin. Is 46 units of lantus too much. I sometimes dont need my insulin at breakfast.

The only way you'll know is by fasting. Take a reading in the morning as you wake up, skip breakfast, and take another reading before lunch. It shouldn't be more than 2mmol/l above the breakfast one.

Repeat that for all the meals and you'll get a good idea of if it's stable or not. What sort of breakfast do you have, and do you have a lot of hypo's ?

There is no number that is too high, it's entirely personal what levels your body needs.

Hi
Thanks for your reply.
I have wholemeaj toast and a banana for breakfast.
I do get the occasional hypo, usually mid-afternoon.
Most people I have spoken to use 15 or less units, this is why I am concerned.

The occasional hypo mid-afternoon means either you are injecting to much novorapid to the carbs you eat for lunch or your lantus dose is set to high, as Celtic Piskie suggests you need to do a fasting test to determine if your lantus is set at the correct dose.

Ask your diabetes nurse for clarification about how best to do fasting (basal) test.
