Lantus..is it ok to self adjust?

Hi all,
I am still having problems with my BS levels. I have lost faith in my specialist nurse. She said she was happy with my levels. Now they are around 8 - 9 in the morning and still very high at 2 and 3hrs after a meal and sometimes higher. Her answer was that our local endocrine Dr thinks it is ok if it is still high at up to 3hrs. I also told her that after she increases my units the BS is ok for up to a week and then increases again. She appeared to ignore that. She has basically discharged me back to GP as she is happy with my readings, although she said to ring her if I felt it was necessary. I increased my Lantus by two units about a week ago and my sugars are increasing again to the region of 9.4 in the morning to 11.4 before meals!!
Do you feel that it is ok to increase my Lantus units myself? or should it only be done via medical advice/supervision??
This is all really getting me down now, especially as I feel so washed out when my sugars are high.

Thanks
Mervyn

Mervyn,
As a fellow T2, i have only had to adjust downward, but at your levels ,which you say you are not happy, and is above the NICE guidelines, I would recontact the nurse and request help on reducing your BG if she cannot/will not help ask her to re - refer to the Endo/or other Endo.
If she does not help, Request that your GP refers to a different hospital/clinic.

I agree with Fergus.

Yes, it is fine to self adjust, in very small leaps, and with Lantus, leave it at leat a week before assessing whether it has worked. BUT, it sounds to me, assuming you diet hasn't chnaged, that you do need togo back to them, as it could be that you need a change in insulin regime?

Thankyou both.

I am due an HBA1C in a couple of weeks time...so will get that and make an appointment to see my own GP at the same time.

Hi Mervin and all,
I too am on Lanctus - have been for only 4 weeks. I dont like it too much, insulin regime makes me very hungry and my levels are always above the NICE guidlines and like yours about 9 in morning (fasting) and are around 8 or 9 all day. My DSN suggested altering the dose by 2 units and see what happens over a week then change again if not happy.
