Lantus Problem

Hi, I am Dennis, I am 23 years old, and I am gonna go right to the topic. (Sorry for any grammar errors)

I am a newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes patient. I was hospitalized for 7 days, and yesterday was my first night at home since then. My therapy is 6-12 Humalog before every meal, and 22 Lantus units at 22:00 at night. During my stay at the hospital, the reaction of my body to Humalog was a subtle feeling of pressure on some of the organs that "walked" across the body every other day, and then it disappeared. It was a feeling like someone was applying pressure with a finger to a body part and then slowly moving it across for a minute or two. I figured it was my body adjusting to the dosage and so on, and also to the new diet. Btw, I do not have any damage on any nerves, organs, nothing...my whole body is healthy.

However, my experience with Lantus was not unpleasant till last night.
The dosage holds the sugar in check pretty good, I wake up with a sugar level between 6.0 and 7.5 tops each morning. I went to bed around midnight, and what happened around 2:00 or 3:00 was, a feeling of a fast rising blood pressure across the body. Like I am being blown up. It was similar to the feeling of sleep paralysis, if You are familiar with that kind of thing, only this time, I was able to move. It was accompanied with a subtle temperature change, and It teared me off from sleep. I was sitting on the bed before I even regained consciousness from sleep, I guess, fear plays a big role in it.
Also, my Clickstar Pen was never used before, so after adjusting the dosage, the motor was spinning wildly for a split second, but I heard no clicks at that moment. I do not know If any insulin came out at that moment, and I finished the dosage anyway.
My question is, can it be that it is my body adjusting to it, just like it was the case with Humalog?
Can it cause some kind of damage if I ignore it too much and so on? Is it a allergic reaction ?
I am new to this, and that sensation was pretty scary, so any input would be much appreciated.

Hi and welcome. A diagnosis of T2 rather than T1 at age 22 is very unusual unless you have a lot of excess weight? Insulin wouldn't normally cause any real side effects but some people do react to some types and have to change. I wonder whether your problem during the night was in fact a hypo? Did you check your blood sugar when you felt strange? If you continue to have problems it may be worth trying a change of insulins just in case? Novorapid is a very common and problem-free rapid and Levemir is a popular alternative to Lantus. It's not for me to guess what might be needed, but be aware that there are options to discuss with the GP.

Hello Daibel, and thank you for the reply.
The reason for my situation is almost chronic stress and childhood traumas. I caught the disorder by surprise, and here I am. I am actually pretty thin.
I didn't check my bg, because I fell asleep fast again. I had low bg a couple of times, but this was different from my previous experiences. I hope it doesn't happen again. I will, however, use 20 instead of 22 Lantus unit tonight to see if it is a dosage issue. I have an appointment for tomorrow morning, so I will surely check everything.

As for your reaction to the insulins you are using, get in touch with your DSN and explain to them what is going on, some people can be allergic to analogue insulins so its worth mentioning.

Hello, Thank you noblehead for the reply.
I am curious if it can cause any issues like seizures for example? I will remember to check my bg next time. As for the others things you've said, I will check tomorrow with my doc for sure. The thing is, I am only in it for a couple of days, so actually I feel like I am still in denial. Like tomorrow it will be over, so confusion and fear hinder me from clear thinking.

It seems to me that you are taking a lot of insulin. And as @Daibell said it is unusual to be diagnosed as Type 2 especially as you are slim. I was diagnosed Type 1 in my 60s so there is really no limit to the age that T1 can be diagnosed.

How much do you weigh in kilograms?

I had 63 kg before the disorder, 57 after. I lost that weight in 10 days.
As I said, stress played a major role in developing this disorder. I get that everyday, concerning my age. What can I say, I will try a little dosage tonight.

I dunno if it's the same but I went through a period when I was waking up about 3am sweating, and very hot and with my heart feeling like it was pounding, like a hot flush but strangely at the same time every night. It was when I'd not been on lantus very long. I mentioned it to my doctor and he suggested I set my alarm to a short while before it was happening every night and to check I was having hypos. I did and I wasn't. It went away after a couple of weeks. It may just be your body adjusting.

Just an update.
I took 18 lantus units first night, and 20 last night. Everything is fine again, no complications. It was indeed my body adjusting to it.
