Lantus solo star

I have just heard about Lantus Solo star and taking only one injection daily. Has anyone any experience of this? I have been a diabetic Type1 since 2004 and have found it very hard as I seem to be hypersensitive to adjustment of insulin levels blood sugars are either constantly high or constantly low. Many thanks

I currently use the solostar pens, they are OK and not had any issues up to now, being a disposable pen they are not as robust as some pens.

When you change over you might want to do some basal checks, if your unsure about how to do this have a look at the following:

Thank you it would be a dream if I can do this!!! So let me get this right you only take one injection a day?? And thank you x
 
For some people lantus works well as a single injection of basal insulin. For others, such as me, they need two as the lantus doesn't last 24 hours. It is normally used as a basal, so as part of an MDI regime. The way you describe one injection per day suggests you are not using insulin in this fashion. What is your current treatment?

I have 18 units of leviemir at bedtime then 8 in the morning when I wake up and then Nova Rapid as and when on eat with 1unit to 10 carbs ratio....
 
Sounds fair. Lantus is an interesting one. Being slightly acidic, some people report a burning sensation on injection. I have had other issues with it's mechanism of operation and moved off it to levemir very recently. As I said, most people manage one injection a day. To maintain a flat basal I had to use it in two.

And you don't use anything fast acting with food?? I find it quite baffling that something like this could work as I had thought of the pump therapy not long ago but my consultant advised against it as it is not easy :)
 
No, I'm on MDI. Looking at pump myself due to activity and variation of action during the day.
 
Multiple daily injections. Basal, for example levemir or lantus plus bolus with food, ie Novorapid or apidra. The same thing that you do.

Jo - you still have to take Novorapid with food, but only one shot of Lantus rather than two of Levemir. Even better would be to get Tresiba which lasts 42 hours, although you still take it once a day. lantus can tail-off a bit towards the end of it's 24 hours for some.

Yes I just take one injection of lantus a day, some people have to take two injections as they find it doesn't last a full 24 hours, in most cases those who use levemir as their basal do have to split-dose to get a good 24 coverage, by doing some basal fasting checks you will see if your lantus needs to be split.

There a lot of work involved in pump therapy , especially in the initial stages of changing over from MDI, I expect this is what your consultant is referring to.

Yes that's what I was told it's not as easy as people think it's ok I will consider all options not giving up yet xx

Never give up Joanne, it's a case of trying different things before you find the right level of control, persevere and stay focussed :)

I found lantus quite painful at time when injecting in my belly but I have now moved to my thighs and it's much better

I take a daily lantus injection in the morning and it works well. Then small amounts of Novorapid. Only had the odd time where there has been a little pain on injecting but assume I must be hitting a nerve or something.
