My ex husband is newly diagnosed. He has been put on 3g metformin per day as well as 3mg glimpazide ( I think thats how its spelled) He is having alot of muscle weakness in his legs and a lot of backache. I feel that the metformin is a really large dose. Does anyone on here take such a large dose of metformin and is the muscle weakness a side effect
Thanks for taking the time to read this

Normal protocol is to start with a small dose and ramp it up slowly to avoid side effects. Normal maximum dose is 2500 mg though I've heard of 3g being prescribed on occasion.

Any such symptoms really need to be run past your doctor, indicators would be if they started at the same time as he started the met and if they stopped when it is discontinued. Or shortly afterwards as met has a moderate half life and its effects continue for some while after stopping.

It's possibly a side effect, but was he also prescribed a statin?

I don't personally know anyone who uses that much metformin. I use 1mg.
is the other stuff Gliclazide?
I don't think muscle weekness is a side effect of either, but you can look them up online.
the weakness could be the diabetes, if it's gone untreated for a long time. Cutting the carbs, would allow the doses to come down a lot, but as has already been said. Tell your ex to see the doctor or DSN ASAP
Ps how's his digestion on that dose of Met?
