Sorry if this has been asked already, I did search, but only found retinopathy related results,

Has anyone here had laser eye surgery to correct vision, I want to get it done, but have heard mixed things as to whether diabetics should get it done?

At my last visit to the hospital, the doc told me just to make sure the laser surgery people are fully aware that I’m diabetic,
But some people are telling me the diabetic people shouldn't have this type of surgery done..... ????

And, if anyone has had it done, any recommendations of where to have it done would be appreciated :D

If you are not a well controlled Diabetic ( don't know if you are or not !) and it affects your eye sight then, sometimes, getting back good control will help correct your eye sight once the Bg levels fall.

However, if you get the correctional surgery then the eye sight will not go back to what it used to be when you regain good control. It will only be as good as the correctional surgery allows.

I'd say I am reasonably well controlled,

HbA1c normally between 5.8 - 6.3, rarely hypo, BG normally between 4 and 5 am,
my vision is bad due to my astigmatism, not to anything else (I think) the hospital. and opticians say it's due to age, not anything else,

and for me it's more vanity, as I don't like wearing glasses, they are also restricting with my line of work,

thanks for the response

If you are well controlled then you need to discuss all the ins and outs with the Consultant. He/ she is the best person to talk to.

Exactly the same as me. I had Laser Surgery around 4 years ago, and never looked back. I went to UltraLase in Clifton (Bristol), and explained to them that I was T2. I ended up going for the most expensive option (tissue sparing, wavefront, cornea mapping, epiflap, Lasek, etc...). It did cost a bit more, but it was worth it for the peace of mind. I think I paid around £4k for the surgery, which was on interest free credit for 4 years (around £100 per month).

I'd recommend it wholeheartedly.
